Great CEOs Are Lazy, by Jim Schleckser

How do the really exceptional CEOs get more done in less time than everyone else? What is their technique for getting their work done while still having the time to spend pursuing hobbies and spending quality time with their friends and family?

The truth is that great and lazy CEOs know a secret when it comes to time management. Rather than spending a little time on a lot of things, the best CEOs spend most of their time eliminating the single biggest constraint to the growth of their business. They spend a lot of time diagnosing this constraint before taking action. This process is similar to looking for the kink in a garden hose so you can get the flow going again. These is no use trying to unkink the hose until you find the actual problem.

Depending on the nature of the constraint, they engage in fixing the kink in the hose using one of five different roles the
Learner
Architect
Coach
Engineer
Player

These form the archetype for great leadership. These are all high leverage roles that create a permanent improvement in the business.

This insight isn't just some theory either; it s derived directly from working with thousands of CEOs running high growth companies. The trick to being great and lazy is to only work at the point of constraint and avoid all work that doesn't increase organizational capacity.

Lazy CEOs have a series of well developed tools to properly avoid this non-value work.

I choose a lazy person to do a hard job. Because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it. -Bill Gates. So, do you want to keep working hard? Or would you rather get busy being lazy?

Review
This book taught that to be a great CEO I needed to focus all of my energy on relieving the top bottleneck in my business, one at a time. I learned that great CEOs did not spread themselves around like peanut butter trying to touch everyone in the organization. Instead, a great CEO has the discipline and guts to relentlessly attack the bottleneck until it is removed. Then he or she moves to the next bottleneck... --Dave Lindsey, Founder & Chairman, DEFENDERS

Great CEOs Are Lazy is a brilliant book for anyone that wants to win as an entrepreneur or CEO. Schleckser's insights are powerful and practical - ripe for growth oriented CEOs wanting to get to the top AND be happy --Tom Adams, Former CEO Rosetta Stone, Chairman of Pedago and 2009 EY's National Entrepreneur of the Year.

I was hooked after the first chapter. I like to say CEOs don't really do anything they just cause things to happen and remove obstacles. Jim does an excellent job of describing just how being lazy will make you a better CEO. He doesn't just offer theoretical advice, he gives you practical examples and strategies on how to become a more effective and lazy CEO. Well done Jim. --Maria Haggerty CEO, Dotcom Distribution.

A must read for every Business Owner and CEO alike!
By Francis J. Byrne
I sailed through Great CEOs are Lazy in one day! It was like attending a valuable two-day seminar without ever leaving home. The book is a common sense guide that forces the CEO to re-evaluate where the focus on their business should be. With plenty of A-ha moments throughout, Jim packs the book full of useful information he has developed over the years, paired with wisdom from top leadership authors. Personally, I could have used more examples that highlighted the service industry, and although our company is smaller in scale than the high growth companies referenced, the concepts still apply. I definitely was wearing my Learner Hat throughout. A great book from a first-time author!

A masterful storyteller...
By Joseph Mechlinski
A masterful storyteller, Jim Schleckser’s experience and knowledge of CEOs is unparalleled. The real secret to being a great CEO is outlined in his unbelievably simplistic “5 Hat Approach” and an intentional shift in your attitude. His vision for helping and empowering CEOs bursts forth on every page. It’s lonely at the top, but with passion like his, Schleckser makes the journey a whole lot easier.
