This book of eight brief chapters on different aspects of the visual arts is designed to explore the nature of imagery and its relevance to many facets of our lives. Drawing on a wealth of examples from Western and non-Western art through the ages, it examines a wide range of themes, from the relationship between form and meaning, to the methodologies of art-historical analysis, to the controversies that have surrounded certain works of art both past and present.

The author's concise and clear analytical approach to understanding and appreciating works of art helps readers understand the various ways of interpreting images by artists as diverse as Leonardo da Vinci, Vincent van Gogh, and Jackson Pollock. THE VISUAL ARTS affect our lives whether or not we ever set foot in a museum. Billboards use images to advertise products; pictures and sculptures stimulate our senses and decorate our urban and rural spaces. These, along with the buildings we inhabit, are manifestations of the visual arts.

This is a book of eight brief essays on different aspects of the visual arts. It is designed to engage readers with the nature of imagery and its relevance to their lives. Illustrations are drawn from Western and nonwestern art to give readers a range of the artistic possibilities in widely diverse societies.

Chapter 1 considers the universal appeal of images, while Chapter 2 addresses some of the culturally determined reasons for creating works of art. In Chapter 3, the relationship between form and meaning is surveyed, and Chapter 4 situates the artist in two kinds of context—prevailing aesthetic convention and practical training. The recurring formal theme of the circle, the column as a structural theme, and two iconographic themes—mother and child, and the artist's confrontation with death—are the subjects of Chapter 5.

When we view works of art today, we may not be seeing them in their original setting. In Chapter 6, therefore, we consider art in and out of the context intended by the artist. Since works of art have been analyzed from several different viewpoints, Chapter 7 introduces the major theoretical ways of interpreting imagery, focusing primarily on van Gogh's painting A Pair of Wooden Clogs. The final chapter challenges readers to come to grips with some of the controversies in which the visual arts have been involved.

According to General Shlomo Gazit, a former Chief of Israel Military Intelligence, Yoni had a complex personality; on the one hand, he was a superb warrior and commander, brave and devoted, yet on the other hand, he was a man blessed with many other talents, with a rich and fertile imagination and an exceptionally analytical mind. It is this breadth of character that emanates from his letters. About the Author
Iddo Netanyahu is an Israeli physician, author and playwright. He is the younger brother of Benjamin Netanyahu, current Prime Minister of Israel and Yonatan Netanyahu, killed in the Entebbe hostage rescue. He has an MD from Hebrew University of Jerusalem School of Medicine and did post-doctoral training at Georgetown University Hospital, and Mount Sinai Medical Center.

Benjamin Netanyahu is professor emeritus of Judaic studies at Cornell University and currently director of The Jonathan Institute. He is author of numerous books and studies in the field of medieval and modern Jewish history.

Great life in letters

I read this book about 20 years ago. Back then I wanted to buy a few copies to give to my relatives and could not find it. I am glad it is printed again.
Jonathan lived a short but tremendous life. He died for his people and his ideas. It is amazing to see a young man, when he was a teenager, and being so patriotic.
This should be a required reading in schools across America. May be his role model will instill in the young (and old) love for their country and sacrifice.

Startling

I picked up The Letters of Jonathan Netanyahu at Ben Gurion on my way back to the states without any expectations (after all, how good can a book picked up at the airport be?)...and I was completely blown away - this is the most powerful book that I have ever read. In an age of anti-heroes and villians, where it is so easy to find moral failure in people and literature - Jonathan shines through as a star among a multitude of gray, flabby inertia. His well thought-out convictions followed by the courage to act on them to the end, despite the sacrifice that they entailed, are a standard that one should strive for. "I do not attribute value to a life without meaning," he said at 17, simply and perceptively - something that is so rare to see in people at any age, where almost everyone I know there tithers from job to job with no purpose other than the accumulation of material wealth (which inevitably doesn't make them any happier).

I think I will need a great passage of time and multiple reads before I can fully sort out my thoughts on this book. Everything from the Wars of the Jews (which are still as bitter and short-sighted as he talks about) to his contrast of the U.S. and Israel, to the quality of the people serving in the IDF, to what brings happiness and contentment to ones life, all ring true to me.

I know that there is more to say - a lot more - but I'm going to let this review stand on its own for now.

Inspirational... an unadulterated, human perspective

I was recently introduced to this work by a friend who took a curious interest in my decision to leave a career in securities and investments for a position with the humanitarian arm of the military. More than any military or political aspects of the book, I was profoundly impressed with the maturity, strength, and convictions of Mr. Netanyahu as an individual. His wisdom and fortitude and pride for his country are outweighed only by the depth of love for his family. What a fresh perspective juxtaposed with the persona of contemporary Western adolescents!

I'd like to give it four because I have about 90 ...

The book is truly informative and there are pictures to aid in the literature that are invaluable. I'd like to give it four because I have about 90 pages that are in upside down and numerically backwards but that is not the author's fault but the publishers. The quality of the writing is superior and deserves to be read by everyone of any culture and therefore it is definitely five star quality.

The city of Baltimore saw 234 murders in 1988. Allowed unlimited access to a shift of the city's homicide unit, police reporter Simon chronicles that year. The sociopaths, the crackheads, and their crimes are horrifying, but equal horrors are found in the attitudes of jurors in a case of the shooting and blinding of a policeman and in statistics showing the ultimate legal fates of those apprehended by the unit. Immersing his readers in cases, procedures, politics, and the detectives' personalities, Simon risks being sabotaged by the sheer scope of his account. Still, for those with strong stomachs and the willingness to work to keep the characters and dramas straight, he has produced a riveting slice of urban life. Recommended.

"Homicide" A Great Book That Inspired Even Greater TV

In the opening scene of the classic HBO series "The Wire" a Baltimore homicide detective interviews the witness to a seemingly senseless murder of a teenager in the street and wants to know why the victim's street name was "Snot Boogie" and why he was shot. Reading "The Wire" producer David Simon's journal of a year spent with the Baltimore homicide department when he was a crime reporter for the Baltimore Sun, I was certain that scene was so real it had to be in the book somewhere. And it was, toward the end.
Simon was attuned to life on the gritty, city streets of Baltimore with an ear for the argot unlike any other producer of a TV crime show or crime writer. It showed in the TV series "Homicide: Life on the Streets," "The Corner," and lastly his masterpiece, "The Wire," and it shows in this pull-no-punches book. The senseless killings, the frustration of the detectives when confronted with a stone-cold "who-dun-it" they knew would never get solved, the anger when obviously guilty people they had arrested went free after trial ... it's all here, and more. As I read this book, I could see the models for the characters who appeared in the TV shows (I didn't even need to see the photos of the actors playing these models to figure out who they were) being developed. It isn't easy to make non-fiction a gripping read, but David Simon makes it look easy.

A remarkably vivid and deep look into the daily lives of murder police

I'm perpetually trying to get back into reading, and for some reason, I settled on this book to do it sometime last year. Maybe it's because I'm a criminal defense lawyer and I wanted to see how the other side lives. Who knows.

After I started, I could barely put this book down. I have no idea how Simon managed to get as much access to the police department as he did, but it was an extraordinarily revealing look at how homicide detectives operate. Not just the investigation of cases, either (although that is fascinating in and of itself). The politics of a big-city cop shop - the chain of command, the objectives, the cases which are deemed important versus those that are not.

It's not going to be for anyone. There's graphic stuff here. The book takes you to some very grim places. After all, it's a book about murder police. But if police interest you, if homicide interests you, or if you just want to see what life would be like as a detective, read this. You won't regret it.

(And I defy you to read this and then not start watching The Wire, one of Simon's television series having to do with crime in Baltimore.)

Engrossing Narrative Nonfiction

As a huge fan of The Wire (I've watched the series through at least 5 times), I can't believe I only read this just now. This book is probably my favorite narrative nonfiction book of all time now, along with Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. It is written much like a novel, with engaging stories and characters throughout.

The best part is that, like real life, not all of the storylines get neatly tied off in a bow. Just like life, politics dictates that resources are shifted from one case that has gone cold to the next hot case.

The bits about interrogation are also amazing, tackling interview techniques used by cops, discussion around Miranda warnings and the 5th Amendment, and how cops have to ork around these limitations.

Really awesome stuff. If you have ever been interested in Law & Order, The Wire, Radley Balko, or issues of police brutality or effectiveness, or if you have ever lived in an American city, or in America, I consider this a must-read. Do it!

Some Value, But Not Much

Two stars, because it has a modicum of value but doesn't really manage to accomplish any whole goal. It does demonstrate some Photoshop techniques. And it does it by taking stabs at emulating fine art and old photographic methods. But as a Photoshop text, it doesn't spend enough time on each technique to master it. And it certainly doesn't demonstrate that Photoshop and selective shooting can produce a worthy representation in the spirit of the intended art method. All but a very few of the results are rather embarrassing, being very crude attempts to do a photo/digital version of fine art.I don't think any discerning person will buy into most of them. I certainly wouldn't claim any of them.

Perhaps part of that is because technique must carry out a vision, an image that exists within the artist. It must have a purpose other than just to see if you can do it. A limp clock does not a Dali make. There is vastly more to pointillism than painting in dots. So get the book cheap. Work through the methods. You'll learn something about Photoshop, and what you learn will help you do something artistic IF you happen to be an artist. The artist learns techniques to realize his vision. Got a vision? Okay. Plan on tons of work to realize it. No particular vision? Develop some artistic sense before you worry about these methods.

Well Done Examples for Photo Enhancement

Like the others I've read in this series, this book delivers just what it claims it will. Using this book, you can follow step by well explained step changing the look of your photos into variations of the old pictorial styles - but updated.

Pictorial was a movement active starting about 120 years ago and lasting up to about the 1920's although some still practice it today. Frex, one may argue that Sally Mann is a pictorialist especially in her latest work using the wet plate processes. Pictorialsm promoted that photography should imitate the look of fine art painters. It was superseded more or less by the photography as pure photography promoted most famously by Ansel Adams and today practiced by masters such as Clyde Butcher.

Taking a photograph and converting it to look like an impressionistic painting may go against the grain of some pure photographers but it's not only fun, but it can leave you with a darn good image. This book will give examples of how to convert a typical standard photo into one of over 60 fine art or pictorial styles. It's a lot easier than trying to figure this stuff out on your own.

The book does better on taking modern digital or digitized photos and converting into other photo styles than it does in fine art painters, but it succeeds in both areas giving the reader either a complete recipe or at worst, a good stepping off place.

The book adds one more valuable volume to this O'Reilly series. Well worth the purchase and a good reference read.

Almost, but not quite.

John Beardsworth is a bit misleading in saying his techniques will reproduce the effects of great artists. In some, he comes close, such as in the Van Gogh sunflowers, but his fauve scene looks more like washed-out watercolor, and the others look like doctored photographs. He is more successful in reproducing the effects of great photographers, such as the darkroom work of Ansel Adams. The best way to use the Fine Art Effects Cookbook is to ignore the results and concentrate on the step-by-step techniques, which he presents superbly, and use those for your own effects.
