A History of US: The New Nation: 1789-1850 A History of US Book Four, by Joy Hakim

Recommended by the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy as an exemplary informational text.

Beginning with George Washington's inauguration and continuing into the nineteenth century, The New Nation tells the story of the remarkable challenges that the freshly formed United States faced. Thomas Jefferson's purchase of the Louisiana Territories (bought from France at a mere four cents an acre!), Lewis and Clark's daring expedition through this wilderness, the War of 1812 a.k.a. "Revolutionary War, Part II," Tecumseh's effort to form an Indian confederacy, the growth of Southern plantations, the beginning of the abolitionist movement, and the disgraceful Trail of Tears are just a few of the setbacks, sidetracks, and formidable tasks put in the new nation's path. Master storyteller Joy Hakim weaves these dramatic events and more into a seamless tale that's so exciting, how could it be true? But it is- it's A History of US.

Best US History Textbooks
By Rob
Wonderful history books! I stumbled upon this series looking to supplement our existing homeschool curriculum--It quickly became our new curriculum! It's written in such an engaging narrative style and does a great job of not only explaining the important events, but the causes of them and reasons for them. It has made history come alive--I'm a history fan for the first time in my life--and it's my 4th and 6th graders' favorite subject. I think this book would work for around 3rd graders through at least middle school, if not high school. I can't begin to count all of the great discussions we've had sparked by these books. We've read 3 volumes and I just ordered the next. My only negative is that the kindle doesn't include all the side notes, as other reviews have mentioned. My kids have enjoyed reading on their tablets for a change, and it's so much more economical if everyone wants their own copy to read, but we are going back to the print for the next volume. I recommend it highly.

Consummate informational text
By HH
Breaking the textbook mold, "A History of US" contains none of the intimidation that comes with behemoth texts. It tells the tale of America in 10 user-friendly, small, illustrated books written in a personal tone, as if the author were a storyteller. (An 11th source book, with original documents, is also available.) In this volume, beginning with George Washington's inauguration and continuing into the 19th century, Hakim tells of Thomas Jefferson's purchase of the Louisiana Territory (bought from France for four cents an acre!), Lewis and Clark's daring expedition through the wilderness, the War of 1812 sometimes called the "Revolutionary War, Part II," Tecumseh's effort to form an Indian confederacy, the growth of Southern plantations, the beginning of the abolitionist movement, and the Trail of Tears. These dramatic events and more are woven into a "new nation" tale that just happens to be true.

Anger and Forgiveness: Resentment, Generosity, Justice, by Martha C. Nussbaum

Anger is not just ubiquitous, it is also popular. Many people think it is impossible to care sufficiently for justice without anger at injustice. Many believe that it is impossible for individuals to vindicate their own self-respect or to move beyond an injury without anger. To not feel anger in those cases would be considered suspect. Is this how we should think about anger, or is anger above all a disease, deforming both the personal and the political?

In this wide-ranging book, Martha C. Nussbaum, one of our leading public intellectuals, argues that anger is conceptually confused and normatively pernicious. It assumes that the suffering of the wrongdoer restores the thing that was damaged, and it betrays an all-too-lively interest in relative status and humiliation. Studying anger in intimate relationships, casual daily interactions, the workplace, the criminal justice system, and movements for social transformation, Nussbaum shows that anger's core ideas are both infantile and harmful.

Is forgiveness the best way of transcending anger? Nussbaum examines different conceptions of this much-sentimentalized notion, both in the Jewish and Christian traditions and in secular morality. Some forms of forgiveness are ethically promising, she claims, but others are subtle allies of retribution: those that exact a performance of contrition and abasement as a condition of waiving angry feelings. In general, she argues, a spirit of generosity (combined, in some cases, with a reliance on impartial welfare-oriented legal institutions) is the best way to respond to injury. Applied to the personal and the political realms, Nussbaum's profoundly insightful and erudite view of anger and forgiveness puts both in a startling new light.

Review

"Written with her usual mix of grace, precision, passion, and breathtaking scope, Nussbaum probes two seemingly polar emotions underlying our notions of justice-anger and forgiveness. She finds them part of the same vindictive drama, and each problematic. Her call is to move beyond them to become 'strange sorts of people, part Stoic and part creatures of love.' The book offers an important and timely challenge, a most worthwhile and enlightening read for those interested in philosophy, psychology, law, politics, religion-or simply living in today's world." --C. Daniel Batson, Professor Emeritus of Psychology, University of Kansas

"This superlative study bristles with insights unexplored either in philosophy or the social sciences. These include conceptual comparisons among Gandhi, King and Mandela in the contexts of anger and forgiveness, violence and nonviolence. Nussbaum has long excelled as a philosopher and her abundant talent continues on display, enhanced by contemporary political analysis. She reveals how these leaders of mass movements diagnosed the roots of anger and violence in fear and then actualized prescriptions of forgiveness. Nussbaum thus extends in new directions important ideas advanced in her more recent books. This unique corpus of theory makes her work compulsory reading for an understanding of our politics and society today." --Dennis Dalton, Professor Emeritus of Political Science, Barnard College, Columbia University and author of Mahatma Gandhi. Nonviolent Power in Action (2012)

"This book compels human rights activists to consider the move for activism, distinguishing between 'magical thinking' which the author rejects in favor of a rational approach to crime and punishment, where payback lowering of status have no role to play in defining a theory of justice. 'Transformative anger' is rooted in a theory of public good and social welfare, its revolutionary potential revealed by the author. In politics it is the difference between a repressive regime and a progressive one. Referring to revolutionary moments in history that changed the wrong doer and the wronged, the author explains the limited role that anger played while moving towards social good." --Indira Jaising, The Lawyer's Collective, India

"This stunning book unsettles the foundations of political thought and practice in places like South Africa where anger is routinely dismissed as unproductive and forgiveness as inescapably part of an inherited humanity (Ubuntu). By linking the thought of ancient Greeks to that of contemporary activists such as King, Mandela and Ghandi, Martha Nussbaum creates new grounds for human encounter in which anger can be rediscovered as resource, and forgiveness set free from the logic of retribution." --Jonathan D. Jansen, Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Free State, South Africa

"I'm astonished and delighted. A self-styled upper middle class [ex]-WASP American, using intuitions drawn from Classical Greek and Roman literature and modern philosophy, explains better than most historians and political scientists how in South Africa we converted the sword of apartheid into the ploughshare of constitutional democracy. Brava, Martha, brava! Payback is not the way to go." --Albie Sachs, South African freedom fighter, writer and Constitutional Court Justice

Poetic, just, wise
By David C
Nussbaum is a scholar I have admired for many years, from my first reading of Fragility of Goodness (1986), to Poetic Justice (1996) and Political Emotions (2013). In Anger and Forgiveness (2016), she adds to her ongoing scholarship on justice with the same clear, level-headed, literary approach that first captured my attention. Dedicating the current work to her teacher, Bernard Williams, suggests a certain humility and confidence that make reading her words feel like a gift lovingly given.

Anger, she argues, includes not just awareness of a serious wrong but also a desire that the wrongdoer suffer. This can happen two ways, either by payback or by lowering the wrongdoer's status. Both payback and down-ranking are problematic because they focus backward. Nussbaum argues for the forward-looking emotion she calls Transition, which is future-directed toward action that is less concerned with payback or down-ranking and instead inspires or motivates one to pursue a greater good.

Forgiveness is the subtheme, often distorted into a transaction that does not pursue a greater good but instead reinforces the imbalance that makes anger so problematic to begin with. the Christian tradition is rife with theological perspectives rooted in a transactional understanding of anger and forgiveness, justified by appeals to the anger of God or proverbial admonitions to be slow to anger, not rash. Penance and contrition have their place. But the forward-facing, unconditional forgiveness that waives anger is better. Better still is unconditional love and generosity. Nussbaum examines transactional forgiveness in personal, social, and political realms and concludes that the transactional path is not the one that leads in the end toward generosity, justice, and truth.

Nussbaum's caution about anger's efficacy to bring about justice stands in contrast against much that is written about anger in the therapeutic realm. Family systems analysts examine the triangular functioning of anger in maintaining unjust equilibrium in interpersonal relationships. Anger may serve a helpful function in differentiating the non-anxious presence who then can break generational patterns of neglect or abuse. Narrative therapies find anger helpful in rewriting a patient's story and grant control/authorship of his or her life. While anger may be misdirected, explosive, suppressed, or otherwise harmful, if can as well get our attention like a fever does, indicating that something is wrong that needs to be made right. Anger, as pastoral counselor Andrew Lester points out [Anger: Discovering your Spiritual Ally (2007)], can help us detect and uncover our idols, hidden guilt and shame, and thus clear the path so we can imagine our future stories with hope. Nussbaum would agree at least that anger "may serve as a signal that something is amiss." As a wake-up call, even as a deterrent, it serves a function. but fails to motivate unless it moves beyond the transactional and motivates us toward the common good.

Her claim is in fact as radical as she says: "that in a sane and not excessively anxious and status focused person, angers idea of retribution or payback is a brief dream or cloud, soon dispelled by saner thoughts of personal and social welfare." Well-grounded anger puts itself out of business in its healthier form, becoming "compassionate hope." This is the Transition that moves beyond payback to pursue justice.

Extremely disappointing - Nussbaum has wandered far from scholarship and nuanced moral and political reasoning
By Philosopher
This does not match Nussbaum's record in terms of scholarship or argumentation.

As was the case for disgust and shame in "Hiding from Humanity", Nussbaum targets anger for possessing unredeemable elements, suggesting that core elements of anger have outlived any evolutionary utility. Nussbaum identifies two unredeemable elements within anger - the idea that anger is either about desiring “payback” which fixates on the suffering of the presumed perpetrator, or "the road of status" to which she ascribes at least calculative rationality (which she will also argue is mistaken). As an alternative, she proposes her own partial replacement for anger: “Transitional Anger”, which is not subject to the criticisms that Nussbaum reserves for ordinary anger.

Nussbaum's scholarship of Aristotle, her primary source for her contention that anger is about payback or status, is superficial, interested, and narrow, extremely disappointing and in tension with her previous stellar work. It does not hold up.

Despite the book’s fundamentally parsimonious message, Nussbaum includes winding and circuitous rhetorical paths, like a philosophical labyrinth, constantly hedging with a mass of careful but often abstract qualifiers. Sometimes this suggests the work of a philosopher and expert legal thinker more intent on forestalling objectors than in pursuing valid objections or exploring implications of a fundamental commitment. Nussbaum singles out accidental features of anger (the narrowly-interpreted “payback” and “down-ranking” hypotheses) and “refutes” them analytically and abstractly, avoiding the type of real-life examples and nuanced moral reasoning that we have grown accustomed to expect from her work in the past. Her scholarship (at least in the case of Aristotle, King, and Mandela) is hasty, superficial, and in the case of the latter two, more exploitative than expository.

Now she writes novels as untamed as the Rockies, while spending a fair amount of time in Texas where, it turns out, the Texas Rangers law officers don't ride horses to roundup the bad guys, or have six-shooters strapped to their sexy thighs as she expected. And she's yet to see a poster that says Wanted: Dead or Alive. (Can you tell she has a vivid imagination?)

Sierra wrote her first book at age nine, a fanfic episode of Star Trek when she was fifteen, and she completed her first romance novel at nineteen. She actually kissed William Shatner (Captain Kirk) on the cheek once, and she says that's her biggest claim to fame. Her adventure through the turmoil of trust has taught her that love is the greatest gift. Like her image of the Old West, her writing is untamed, and nothing is off-limits.

She invites you to take a walk on the wild side but only if you dare.

5 hot kinky and even more are deserved stars!
By Cassandra
Cade has made the #1 spot in my fav men of Sierra Cartwright!!! Whatever he pleases, I'm his completely!

I want to hate Sofia for getting the chance with Cade, but I can't hate her. She's a strong, independent and successful business woman who takes no s***. She knows her strength and has built her company from her mother's vision. She didn't had it easy, but never gives up. She's curious and willing to try with Cade.

Cade is a bastard child. A chip on his shoulder that keeps him hidden on the ranch he inheritated, along with some other demons that he thinks no one would understand. And old habits die hard when no one tries to break them.
It's Sofia who evokes feelings in him and yet he pushes her away when she tries to break his walls.
But it's also her that brings out his most dominant nature. Her curiousity awakes some fantasies and she's willing to fulfill them.

His kinks are so freaking hot that I was on fire more than once.

Their chemistry is strong right from the beginning and just gets stronger and stronger with every touch, with every bit of trust that is given freely.
Both characters are strong and you have an instant connection with them both. Their banter is so funny I had a couple of laugh out loud moments.
The story is hot and funny and sometimes heartbreaking.
Sierra Cartwright strikes again with her amazing writing!

PS: There are a couple minor characters that I would love to see getting their own story. *coughs* Thompson and Erin *coughs*

LOVE CADE AND SUMMER
By Aimz
WOW! Brand may be my favorite of all of Sierra Cartwright's books.

I loved Cade and Sofia's story. They meet at Lara and Connor Donovan's wedding celebration. Sofia is an event planner and Cade Donovan is a cowboy who has a 100 year celebration to host, but didn't realize what he was getting himself into with this party.

The chemistry between these two is amazing and Cade Donovan is a Dom who know just how to push her. I could not put this book down and read it cover to cover. It is super hot and I can't wait to meet more of the Donovan Dynasty Series!

Sensual, passionate, erotic.
By Shayna Renee's Spicy Reads
I am completely IN LOVE with CADE DONOVAN! That sexy cowboy can tie me up whenever he pleases! Sierra Cartwright gives us another sensual, passionate, and erotic romance in her fantastic DONOVAN DYNASTY series. I can never get enough of this author. Her writing is so addicting. Her characters are sexy and strong, and her storylines touch the heart. What more can you possibly ask for in this genre?

Cade and Sofia. Two very different characters that compliment each other so well. There is instant chemistry and smoldering heat between the two. One sassy event planner. One tortured gorgeous cowboy. Boom! You got yourself a unputdownable erotic romance!

The initial interaction between Cade and Sofia was HOT! They meet at another Donovan wedding. There is dancing and there is a dark corner where anything could happen. They part ways after just a taste and immediately they want more. Cade is in desperate need of Sofia’s services, event planning that is, and he will do just about anything to make that happen. They both have their demands for each other and the witty banter that ensues is so enjoyable to read.

Beautiful Sofia brings out the sexy dominant nature in Cade. He wants her to surrender, but she is inexperienced and unsure. One stormy night, the connection strengthens and Sofia gives in to her desires. Now, Cade wants so much more than a simple distraction. She brings light to his darkness. She chases away his demons. Sofia thinks being with Cade is too much of a risk, personally and professionally. But with touch after touch of his hands and his dominance, he consumes her and chases away her doubt. Now, whatever happens, it was definitely worth the risk.

I was completely invested in Sofia and Cade’s happily ever after. I cheered them on the whole way through. I was left satisfied and bursting with giddiness by the last page. This series has become a favorite of mine, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

The Way Forward: Renewing the American Idea, by Paul Ryan

From the intellectual leader of the Republican party, an unvarnished look into the state of the conservative movement today and a clear plan for what needs to be done to save the American Idea.
THE WAY FORWARD challenges conventional thinking, outlines his political vision for 2014 and beyond, and shows how essential conservatism is for the future of our nation.

Beginning with a careful analysis of the 2012 election--including a look at the challenge the GOP had in reaching a majority of voters and the prevalence of identity politics--Ryan examines the state of the Republican party and dissects its challenges going forward.

THE WAY FORWARD also offers a detailed critique of not only President Obama but of the progressive movement as a whole--its genesis, its underlying beliefs and philosophies, and how its policies are steering the country to certain ruin.

Culminating in a plan for the future, THE WAY FORWARD argues that the Republican Party is and must remain a conservative party, emphasizing conservatism in a way that demonstrates how it can modernize and appeal to both our deepest concerns and highest ideals.

Getting Out of the Liberal Mud - Progressively
By Dr. David Steele
Several years ago, I set out to read about as many of the United States presidents as possible. Reading about the great leaders in America's history; leaders like George Washington, John Adams, Abraham Lincoln, and Ronald Reagan is an unforgettable experience that tends to leave a mark on each reader.

During this political season filled with failed policies and lackluster leadership, I set out to read about a few men who may one day occupy the Oval Office. The first book is written by the Vice Presidential candidate, Paul Ryan. His book, The Way Forward: Renewing the American Idea is a transparent look at the Wisconsin native and his vision for America.

Readers will be impressed with Ryan's unassuming style. He's a small town boy with big dreams for America. There's no political pretense here; just well-thought out ideas that Ryan proposes in order to rescue our country from the clutches of the Obama administration.

Several reforms are proposed by Paul Ryan. The first proposal he presents is entitlement and health-care reform. The goal here, according to Ryan is to begin by repealing Obama care, the prized jewel of social progressives. Ryan makes it clear that he intends to save social security, medicare, and medicaid. But the current policies will, in the final analysis lead to economic disaster. Ryan proposes commonsense solutions which promote competition among insurance companies and doctors which will ultimately drive down prices; not to mention put more money back into the pocketbook of Americans.

The second proposal includes an economic growth component. Ryan addresses the growing national debt crisis which is over $17 trillion and rising. He addresses the liberal proclivity to tax and spend. Ryan adds, "The bottom line is that when you tax something , you get less of it. So when we tax prosperity and success, we get less of each - and we need more of both so we can get the economy working for everyone again."

Third, tax reform is on Ryan's agenda. He is in favor of a reduction of the corporate tax rate and argues in favor of a simpler tax code. Ryan's reforms would mean "that no business or family would pay more than 25 percent of their income to the federal government." And many Americans would pay considerable less under the Ryan plan.

Fourth, ending cronyism and corporate welfare. Ryan notes, "Cronyism is integral to the progressive approach to governing." A brief look at the Obama policies only confirm this notion. Ryan concludes, "Americans need to know that their government is on their side - encouraging robust competition that will best serve their interests and grow their economy - rather than on the side of big, established corporate players. Capitalism and cronyism are not compatible, and it's time Republicans made it much clear to voters that we are the party that stands for a competitive economy suitable for growth."

Fifth, Ryan makes a good case for regulatory reform. "Going forward," he writes, "we should ease the regulatory burden on the economy, and the best way to do that is to bring meaningful cost-benefit analysis back into the system, reconnect the law with the lawmakers, and restore the balance between the branches of the government. True regulatory reform can restart economic growth - and produce the energy we need."

Sixth, aggressive immigration reform should be a key plank in the GOP platform. Ryan's ideas are among the best I've read as a pathway for citizenship is offered and accountability required.

Seventh, sound monetary policy will guide our country into the future.

Finally, a twenty-first century national defense strategy and foreign policy. Ryan refers to this final component of his plan as the "missed opportunity" of the Obama administration. Moving forward will require a strong military and a foreign policy that builds bridges with our allies around the world.

There's something strangely refreshing about Paul Ryan's approach. Readers will notice that this man is devoted to his family and country. He just happens to be a politician. Here is a man who has strong gifts in the field of economics and understands how to apply a supply-side approach in the current climate. Paul Ryan is a strong leader with strong values and a heart for the American ideal. Whether he ever ends up in the Oval Office is anyone's guess. One thing is true: He knows the way forward.

By Juno
I expected this to be boring. It is the first book I have read regarding politics. I enjoyed it very much. This is real hope and change. Most believe we are on the wrong track, as a country. I like Ryan's ideas and positive attitude. He had a humble upbringing, is smart, down to earth and not afraid to make the tough calls so our children have a chance.
I realize there are biased reviews here, some will never like republican ideas and the same for democratic ideas. But here I see someone who can work across the aisle, which the current administration promised and then immediately proceeded to divide our country.

Stunning photographs of wildlife, great travel information
By Robert H. Kane
I bought this book for a couple of reasons. First, I enjoy nature photography and do a bit myself, and my wife is a birder. Second, we are planning a trip to Costa Rica, and although photography is on the agenda this is to be principally a family vacation. We were delighted to find that this is, for us at least, an all-round resource: a guidebook, a wildlife reference, and a collection of splendid photography. The book is very nicely done, well organized, and beautiful. The photographs, especially the birds, are very well done, indeed. Printing quality and paper are very good. Highly recommended.

A perfect portrayal of Costa Rican natural history
By W. L. Krinsky
This book, with its magnificent photographs and concise and informative text, captures the essence of the different habitats and animals and plants that one can experience on a trip to Costa Rica. As an introduction to the natural history of the country or as a souvenir of a visit, the book is delightful to view and read. The book provides many useful general and specific references to the natural history of Costa Rica and it has a detailed index.

A fabulous book
By Mother of Two
This is a wonderful, tasteful book about how babies are made (conceived, developed in utero, and born). Each page presents a child asking a question (e.g. "Where did I come from?", "How did I get into your tummy?", "How did the sperm get from Dad to you?", "When did I start to look like a baby?", "Could you feel me moving inside you?", "How did you know when I was ready to be born?", etc.) and a parent, sometimes a mom and sometimes a dad, answering the question with concise, tasteful, correct and easily understood words. As you can see from the picture of the cover, the book is done in bright primary colors and uses very sweet illustrations that you and your kids are sure to love. I really appreciated that the children and parents in this book come in different skin tones and don't look a bit dated (the book was published in 2004). I bought this book after a lot of research on the web, conducted frantically on the night of my son's sixth birthday, just after he asked me ALL the questions that I was not at all prepared to answer. We leave this book out in our room and read it when the kids ask us to do so. Our four-year old daughter is very interested in it, more so than our son. For now though, I do skip over the pages that deal specifically with sperm, eggs and private parts. She loves the book any way and is fine when I tell her I'll read her the rest of the pages when she's a bit older. I've read the whole thing to my son since he has asked lots of very detailed questions. I would highly recommend buying this book BEFORE your kids start asking questions though if you, like me, have already been grilled on how babies are made, this is a great book. For now this book is only available from the U.K. but it is definitely worth the extra shipping and wait time. It help that the book is very reasonably priced.

Good starting point
By CC
The strength of this book is that it is accurate, detailed, but most important: age appropriate for probably age 4 - 10. Some children's books on this topic gloss over conception in an unrealistic way. However, this one does a good job. The only thing wrong is that it states a baby grows in the Mom's "tummy." I crossed that out with pencil and wrote "uterus," in the copy I bought for my children. For the rest of the book however, correct terminology is used.

I recommend this title for primary schools, because even though it looks like a picture book for younger children, it would be perfect even for 10 - 12 year olds as well. Older children could be asked (after studying a unit on human reproduction) "what is wrong in this book?" They should be old enough to know babies grow in the uterus, not the stomach. Highly recommended.

Simple and concise
By sj
An excellent book which in a simple and concise way explains where babies come from.
Only note of imprecision is still using the childs idea that the baby is in some way connected to the tummy.
Though this is often a childs response since the stomach is much higher in the body than they realise.
Despite that well worth the cost and the colourful pages add interest.

Black No More, by George Schuyler

What would happen to the race problem in America if black people turned white? Would everybody be happy? These questions and more are answered in George Schuyler's satiric romp. This is the story of Max Disher, a black rogue of an insurance man who, through a scientific transformation process, becomes Mathew Fisher, a white man. Matt dreams up a scam that allows him to become the leader of the White Knights of Nordica, and marry the caucasian gal who rejected him before his change.

Amazon.com Review
This satirical Harlem Renaissance-era novel by black conservative intellectual George S. Schuyler (1895-1977), who wrote for the Pittsburgh Courier and contributed to the NAACP's influential Crisis magazine, is a hilariously insightful treatise on the absurdities of racial identity. Dr. Junius Crookman, a Harlem-based African American physician, mysteriously returns from Germany with a formula that can transform black people into whites. "It looked," Schuyler deadpans, "as though science was to succeed where the Civil War failed." One of the first to enlist Dr. Crookman's services is an insurance salesman named Max Disher, who as the white Matthew Fisher is now free to pursue the white women who once rejected him and otherwise bask in Euro-American social privilege (including a top position in a hate group called the Knights of Nordica). Schuyler unveils the futility of this electro-chemical form of "passing" through the emptiness the Disher/Fisher character encounters in the white cultural world, which doesn't measure up to the Harlem nightlife--revealing the poison behind the notion of wanting to be something you're not. --Eugene Holley Jr.

From Kirkus Reviews
37575380.X99 Schuyler, George BLACK NO MORE First published in 1931, this scathing satire on race embodies all the controversial notions of its author, the grouchy journalist and essayist Schuyler, a kindred spirit of his mentor and fellow misanthrope, H.L. Mencken. Best know for his dissenting essay, The Negro-Art Hokum, Schuyler (1895-1977) mocked most of the more prominent representatives of the Harlem Renaissance, and asks in this rollicking bit of speculative fiction: What if black people could change themselves to white? Inspired by popular products for skin-lightening, Schuyler imagines the discovery of a process that transforms Negroes into white people, and then watches all hell break loose. When Dr. Junius Crookman promises a three-day makeover, Max Disher, a dapper insurance agent with a taste for yallah gals, thinks of one thingall the ofay girls he can now pursue, especially a snobby cracker who snubbed him in a Harlem night club. For fifty bucks, Max is one of Crookmans first patients and emerges from his Frankenstein-like office with his new pork-colored skin. But Maxs glorious new adventure turns ugly right away: his old friends reject him; his landlady accuses him of no race pride, and worsehe finds white people less courteous and less interesting. The country too grows increasingly hysterical: the South calls for congressional action, and the infrastructure of Negro philanthropy begins to crumble. Scuyler smartly postulates the response of official black leadership, and saves his most damning portraits for characters who represent Garvey, DuBois, and Booker T., all of whom ultimately give in to the new process. Maxs dilemma is simpler: he tries to figure out a way to capitalize off his new identity, and soon becomes the right hand man to the Rev. Givens, the grand poobah of the Knights of Nordica, and eventually marries his daughter, the very same girl from that night in Harlem. One problem remains, the whitening process doesnt pass to babies, so Max lives with the fear that his offspring will be his undoing. Not to worry, though, for events overwhelm all in this increasingly outrageous novel. As the hypocrisies mount, and the number of Negroes diminish, calls for racial purity increase. But the frantic researches into genealogy have an unintended resultand one that Schuyler himself constantly arguedthat most white people have dusky ancestors, or as the Rev. Givens so aptly puts it, I guess were all niggers now. Schuylers miscegenetic ideas on race fuel this well-written look at chromatic democracy, a novel that prefigures both Ray Bradbury and Ralph Ellison. This wild book is much more than an historical curiosity, and its resurrection is a revelation. -- Copyright 1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Life is a Con
By Nicholas Stix
George Schuyler's (1895-1977) novel, Black No More, is a deliciously wicked satire on 1920s American racial mores. First published in 1931, it was initially reissued during the late 1980s as part of The Northeastern Library of Black Literature.
Like many satires, Black No More takes a common, controversial idea, gives it form in flesh and blood, and plays it out to its logical conclusion: "What if white America didn't have any more negroes to kick around?"
This idea is realized by "Dr. Junius Crookman" (most of the characters have similarly "subtle" names), who invents an operation for turning black folks white. In lightning speed, the nation becomes monochromatic, as its entire black population "disappears."
No lack of comic -- and dramatic -- complications ensue, when it becomes clear that the operation doesn't change the genetic program for the pigmentation of one's offspring.
George Schuyler worked from a few basic premises: Most of humanity is a damned sight closer to the Devil than to the angels; most men are con artists; and the few who truly believe in anything are even worse!
For Schuyler, W.E.B. DuBois' (1868-1963) "talented tenth" of bourgeois negro society was of no more help to the average black than were the leaders of the racist, white order. Indeed, Schuyler saw those who made a living railing against Jim Crow as having the strongest interest in its preservation: every lynching brought in more money from rich, white reformers.
Thinly veiled caricatures portray DuBois ("Dr. Shakespeare Agamemnon Beard") as a hypocrite, and Marcus Garvey (1887-1940; "Santop Licorice"), the founder of the "Back-to-Africa" movement, as a common swindler (for which Garvey was, in fact, convicted in 1920, and deported in 1924).
For Schuyler, black nationalist rhetoric was merely a smokescreen to obscure its practitioners' class contempt for their erstwhile constituents, whose pockets they were busy picking. (Has anything changed in the meantime?!)
Down deep, Schuyler says, we're all the same -- and God save us! Ultimately, he surmises, if there weren't a color line, men would have had to invent one! His metaphor for American race relations was that of an "insane asylum." (Already during the 1920s -- 60 years before Dinesh D'Souza -- Schuyler had written a pamphlet arguing that total miscegenation, eliminating all distinct races, was the sole cure for America's racial madness.)
Though many of Schuyler's characters are -- as per his genre -- stereotypes, the central pair of "Max Discher/Matthew Fisher" and "Bunny Brown" are as engaging a couple of rogues as any you're likely to be fleeced by, this side of Rudyard Kipling or Chester Himes, their banter generously peppered with the black vernacular of the day.
George Schuyler was a great lover of science fiction, especially the then stupendously popular novels of H.G. Wells. He is the only notable black American novelist to smoothly incorporate science fiction motifs into his work. (To Samuel R. Delany fans: I said "notable" and "smoothly.")
In addition to Schuyler's great story, there are two other reasons for reading Black No More.
First, as by far the most influential black newspaperman this nation has ever seen, George Schuyler bestrode the negro press, and thus, negro America, like a colossus.
From 1924-1966, Schuyler worked at black America's most influential newspaper, the Pittsburgh Courier. But George Schuyler didn't "write" for the Courier; he WAS the Courier. He wrote the weekly, unsigned house editorial; a weekly column, News and Views; wired in scoops and exposes from around America and the world so amazing as to catch the attention of the day's most respected, white newspapers, who also published his work; penned the pseudonymous, serialized pulp novels and short stories that were the Courier's most popular features; and engaged other prominent contemporaries to write for the Courier. It was Schuyler, for instance, who engaged pop historian J.A. Rogers to write the Courier's immensely popular feature on black history. The various strategies of silence and misrepresentation, which are today used (for instance, by alleged journalist Jill Nelson and by Henry Louis Gates Jr.) to erase or diminish Schuyler's legacy, belong to contemporary black studies and black journalism's many scandals.
The second reason for reading Black No More (together with the serialized novels published in book form as Black Empire) is for Schuyler's role as unwitting intellectual godfather of the Nation of Islam. The Nation stole its theory of the "myth of Yacub," which claims that the white man was created 6,000 years ago by an evil black scientist, from Schuyler's Black No More, except that the Nation, as was its wont, turned Schuyler's story on its head. (Schuyler, for his part, was reworking H.G. Wells' story, The Island of Dr. Moreau.)
So read Black No More, enjoy some belly laughs, and learn some history in the bargain.
Black No More has an overly informative foreword by James A. Miller, which is best read as an afterword (so as not to ruin your enjoyment of the book), to clarify historical questions.
Originally published in 1992 in A Different Drummer magazine.

Wonderful and thought provoking
By R. Allen
In my search for quality books written by black writers, I stumbled upon BLACK NO MORE and I am so glad that I did. This is a relatively small book, but probably one of the most thought provoking books that I've ever read. It forces you to look at the power of racisim in all of its incarnations, whether it is being imposed on black people from white people or if it is imposed on blacks from their own people. I think that George Schuyler is one of the most unsung heroes of African American literature and all people (especially Black people) should find the time to read his work. I'm currently purchasing anything I can find that he has written.

Will the Real Black Man Please Stand Up
By Dash Manchette
Although largely forgotten today, George Schuyler was probably the foremost black journalist of the early 20th Century. No doubt much of his modern-day intellectual exile is due to Schuyler's politics. While the rest of black America lurched left, Schuyler published his autobiography, BLACK AND CONSERVATIVE, the title of which says it all. Combine that with Schuyler's noted attack on Malcolm X and, more infamously, his scathing criticism of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Schuyler's alienation became complete. Too bad for the rest of us, as his writing is often quite delicious.

Schuyler occasionally ventured into fiction and BLACK NO MORE is probably the best known of such works. Although the book is often described as science fiction, that label is a tad misleading. It is an extremely entertaining social critique of the American obsession with race and skin color and is packed with the same race hustlers, con artists, demagogues and hypocrites we still see today. I guess the more things change, the more they really do stay the same.

Dr. Junius Crookman (great name, huh?) develops the technology to turn black people white. The first to sign on, Max Disher, uses his new found whiteness to woo the white ladies who would have nothing to do with him before and, hilariously, climb the ladder of a white supremacist hate group. He does not do this out of any desire to pull a fast one on The Man, but rather sees it as the fast track to making a quick buck.

White supremacists are not Schuyler's only target, however. The black advancement organization, clearly modeled on the NAACP, is deeply alarmed - deeply - that soon there will be no more oppressed negroes whose woes will fill the group's coffers and allow its leadership to dine on foie gras. This group's leader is also lampooned appropriately. Apparently W.E.B. Du Bois was the warm-up act for the aforementioned critiques of Malcolm X and MLK, Jr.

Not allowing a good book to end on a sour note, Schuyler brings things full circle at the end, when it is discovered that blacks who have undergone the treatment are a shade whiter than natural born whites! And so the cycle continues. BLACK NO MORE is a treat from an unfortunately largely overlooked figure. Check it out.
