David W. Rogers is associate pastor at The Heights in Richardson, Texas, where he has served since 1998. A family man, beach vacationer, avid reader, and fan of all things sports, David continues to invest in the lives of students and their families since following his call to ministry twenty years ago. He is a graduate of Baylor University and also received a Masters of Divinity from southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and his Doctorate of Ministry from George W. Truett Theological Seminary. David and his wife, Alison, live in Wylie, Texas, with their two children, Jack and Lucy.

Buy the paper book, not the Kindle book!

I LOVE the Talksheets seriew; I HATE the Kindle implementation. When you buy the book, you get the right to copy the handouts for your kids. With the Kindle implementation, the formatted handout pages don't even exist, and if they did, it's a royal pain to copy them (Kindle doesn't have this facility). I'll buy more TalkSheets books, but I'll never buy another Kindle issue of them.

Extremely simplistic. Not worth the money

The book is very simple and any Linux user with a modicum of experience knows far beyond what this book teaches. First four chapters are a joke. There are around 10 labs on TCP fingerprinting with different tools (Xprobe, Sprint, Hydra, nmap). They provide no more info than the man page that comes with the software. Completely unchallenging and utterly boring. Seriously, there's a whole chapter on banner grabbing, which is basically "telnet ip_address" and see what the server answer. Hell, there's a lab on pinging a remote computer and using netcraft.com!

Not to mention the book doesn't even mention common attacks such as CSRF, XSS or SQL Injection!

theory and this one does that and then he shows you the proof in the pudding

Love letter to handicapped sons by a loving father

This was a somewhat unusual small book - made up of short vignettes about the author's two handicapped sons. It was billed as a "love letter", but was more and less than that - often deviating into somewhat severe views of his sons' handicaps. Not sure the author really knew what he wanted the book to be. Nevertheless, it was worth the read.

Much needed message

We need more books like these. Proclaiming the truth, regards to Gods plan for marriage. Marriage is a covenant and it seems that most couples have lost the blue print along the way. Intimacy in marriage seems to be non-exciting and this book gives one some handles to start in the right direction. Keep up the good work. Hope there is more books coming....

A Reading of "Stark Major"

[[VIDEOID:21898191]]I decided on this (relatively) obscure poem, because, rather than Crane's more famous poems (The "Voyages" series, "The Bridge" or "The Broken Tower"), it was unknown to me until I purchased this book. Also, of course, I found it very striking and lovely, though dark.

Kiss of our agony

I'll try to be brief, for we are on holy ground. Hart Crane is among the greatest English Poets; he extends the orphic tradition--he works under the assumption (fact?) that poetry is nothing less than Life staying Death--and not in the tradition of mere "Culture", of elegant verses for elegant people.

Among his few peers, we have Keats, Stevens, Spenser (of the epithalamium), Blake, Shelley, and Shakespeare--yes, I said it and I meant it...at his best, Crane possesses as much daemonic power as Shakespeare. There are others, without a doubt, but rarely will one enounter so much of the concentrated Sublime, of pure poetry in such a small body of work. Some of his final fragments are more True than most of the Qu'ran, the Bible, etc, etc. Like a saint, Crane sacrificed everything in order to give us the gift of his song, including his own life. If he had lived, he would certainly be better known (as if Fame were enough); he might be esteemed our country's greatest artist. My advice, read "Atlantis" until you have it by heart--your life will never be the same.

In short, this is poetry at its highest. A moral force, a religious power, an estatic appraisal of our collective destruction, a hymn to to city, an elegy for birth, a myth for our exiled god, Love, to Whom we must ever strive to know better.

p.s. There is a rumor that the Library of America will (at last!) put out an edition of Crane this Autumn that is likely to be the one to get (my copy of their Stevens is exquisite--it trumped Knopf's Collected Poems, something I never thought possible. So if you want to save your money, you can wait for that & hit the library in the meantime (assuming that your public library is unlike mine, and has something other than than how-to books and unauthorized biographies of Jane Fonda).

A novel approach to career decision-making

I greatly enjoyed The Strategic Career. I've historically approached my career with a sense of inertia, but doing the exercises around personal value propositions really helped me focus on both 1) what it is that I enjoy, and 2) what it is that I'm good at. I think this would be a useful exercise for anyone--whether currently comfortable with their place in the job market or not. With Barnett's experience at McKinsey and as a professor, he does a great job at communicating his points clearly, concisely, and effectively.

What this book is not: a wishy-washy, feel-good approach to "pursuing your dreams." Barnett's method is tested and rigorous. His cases are relatable and well-chosen. His writing is interesting and easy to follow.

I would recommend this to any friends or colleagues looking to make a change, or even just to better understand themselves.

Unique Approach to Finding the Right Career for You!

Barnett's strategic approach to seeking out and ultimately landing a personally satisfying career is unlike any other book or article that I've read on the topic. The application of business strategy (something I'm familiar with as an MBA) to planning a successful career is both intuitive and novel. I especially enjoyed going through exercises to create my Personal Value Proposition and to plan (and prepare) for different outcomes of my recent job search (similar to scenario planning at work). Without Barnett's guidance, I doubt I would have developed the personal insight and the best tools to successfully execute my career search.

Fantastic advice and frameworks for those wanting to think deeply and in a more structured manner about career change. Chock full of case studies demonstrating application of the frameworks and real situations where tradeoffs among aspirations, criteria and choices are brought to life. Very, very helpful book.
