First of all, what a clever concept. Let me tell you what this book is not...It is not some nonsense psychic guide that teaches you how to levitate and cast spells...It does however take you through realistic and applicable steps, right from the most basic, to learn how to read and interpret simple cues and nuances in the people around you. It has very realistic tips and tricks, such as how confidence, observation and positivity play an important part in really understanding and influencing conversation, ultimately giving you the ability to read people and situations so well you could almost say you could "read their minds". One can easily see how this could be useful in today's day and age, in business, in sales, in public speaking. A great read!

This is a really big disappointment. I held off on 11 because I thought they might fix the problems in this new one. But, no - the drafting quality and clarity is very poor, the page layouts are confusing and cluttered, the binding is like a cheap textbook. I will be selling this and purchasing the 10th Edition until a decent one comes out.

Fun and suspenseful

I recommend this book, but only if you can get hold of all three in the series. This is the first, "Shadow of the Swan" is the second, "House of the Wolf" is the third and final of this "The Phoenix Legacy" series. I would say this is one novel in three installments. In my 1981 edition the second and third books both have maps, previous part synopsis (there are 6 parts altogether), and a cast of characters; the third book also has an extensive glossary. It unfortunately has some pretty lame cover art. You can easily find plot synopsis elsewhere. I want to say that this book nicely combines political intrigue with some hard science fiction and social idealism in the context of a far future feudal society. One plot element involves a pseudo-christian religion, but it is not thematic and there is no supernatural, fantastic, or faith-based action. There's enough action and plot twists to keep you turning the pages, but the real strength of the novel is in the characters and the drama. To my mind, there is nothing particularly profound or inventive about this series, but it is well written and entertaining.

Among science fiction books that examine or explore socio-political structures, these books rank at the top of my list along with the Ender's Game trilogy by Orson Scott Card and "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" by Heinlein.

A space opera trilogy which does not underestimate readers

A truly gripping story which contains fully realized characters, not caricatures. As in real life, you get drama, heroism and romance without the melodrama. It is very refreshing and very rare to find a truly entertaining, intricate and well-written story which main drawback as far as I can see are the covers of the books themselves (the original US edition, which is the one I got).
They are clearly the reason why these books are nearly unknown in the science fiction field. I feel certain the author must have been furious. It makes it even more astonishing that I actually bought all three books as they came out years ago (and the suspense in between was pretty bad let me tell you), and is why I can recommend them highly, with the proviso that you really want to read them in order.
This is exactly the reason why we waste our time reading slush: in order to find books like these, if we are persistent enough! And the British edition has very decent covers (and could be easier to find as well, being more recent)

Modern Slant on Age-old Customs

There are many books on Halloween (including another by Jack Santino), but this book is unique in presenting a look at how very old customs have persisted amid the social turmoil and political unrest of Northern Ireland. Since Santino is an American folklorist, one would expect an outsider's view of Halloween. Instead, having lived in Northern Ireland for an extended period and formed working relationships with folklorists there, Santino offers a view of a cultural phenomenon that is both sympathetic and objective. His insights are worth considering. Perhaps the only drawback to this volume is its lack of historical perspective or comparison with other Celtic cultures. Despite this, the present volume is a welcome addition to the library of anyone interested in Halloween itself or Celtic cultural remains.

i found this book to be very informative. i had Jack Santino for a professor in college and took 3 of his classes, one of which required this book. he is the guy to go to if you want to talk about holidays and ways that people interpret and celebrate them. i thought this book was interesting because i didn't know much about irish (northern or republic) holiday customs and he touched on a lot of them in the class. i would reccoment this book to anyone who wants to learn about irish culture and how they celebrate halloween. even if you're just a fan of halloween itself i think you would find it an interesting read.

The book attempts to provide a "roadmap" through computing, what it is at its core as well as how it dialogues with other fields, as we are seeing today and as things will emerge in the future. A strong and bold proposal, yet, I think, not unreasonable.

Bottom Line Up Front: The Word prayed = Prayer answered

With possible exception of classic "US and Brit lit" novels (and not many of those!), I've never been one to rush to get books with lots of pages and that goes for bible studies too. But like the Bible itself, Louis McCall's new book is a rich meal that can be experienced by many types of readers in many different ways. And it's all good. For those saved for many years like myself, it's a reminder "not to be lazy" ...that the Word of God is a Precious Gift ...a key to be used and a weapon to wield Every Day regardless of how busy we get. But even for the New Believer, I love that Louis immediately de-mystifies the subject of prayer so that they no longer see it as some impossible task. Instead, Chapter 1, paragraph 1 says it loud and clear: the Word of God is the Will of God ; praying in line with the Word helps them know their Heavenly Father's heart in a deeper way and partner with Him to bring Heaven on Earth for their benefit and others.

So don't think that you have to "boil the ocean" in one sitting....NO! Study and think about a Chapter a day, or a paragraph in a Chapter a day, or maybe just read one of Louis' personal stories and memorize 1-associated scripture (and if KJV isn't your style, compare with the NKJV, NIV, Message, or some other bible version). However you do it and no matter where you are in your relationship with Jesus, just start ...and get ready to get "strong in the Lord and the power of His Might! (Ephesians 6:10-13)

What's great about this book is that there are one liners ...

Format: The format of the book is decisive- everything is ordered (generally) in terms of scripture, what to draw from it and a personalization section. What's great about this book is that there are one liners that guide your thinking before you read the next passage. However, sometimes, I find it hard to keep track of one thought at a time or I find myself needing to put down the book and look up the scriptures every so often to stay in line with the thought process that could sometimes be more explicitly written out. Format 3.8/5

Content: Regarding the contents of the book, on the surface, one can easily make the general conclusion that this is a book solely on prayer or can come across like a self-help book where the author is giving personal anecdotes to assist in the general area of prayer or strengthening of prayer life. However, I would disagree with that. I think that the author makes it very clear from chapter 1 that prayer is not just knowing and seeking the will of God but also knowing who he is. I would say that this is a book that a beginner would have a bit trouble with thinking through faith, favor, love and all a lot of terms as they are spoken in a Christian-nese way (in a Christian context). Praying and freeing Gods promises to us counter-attacks and sets up a firewall of protection and power from the bombardment of "lies & untruths" that try to render us ineffective and weak. Know who we are, and who's we are in the scriptures, is the theme throughout Louis's book and he makes it easy to "put up your dukes" in the Spirit and add scriptural power to your prayer! Great job Louis for helping us to not praying according to our feelings and emotions but using the sword of the Spirit skillfully and effectively! Every one needs this book in their resource arsenal!

About the Author

Benjamin Bengfort is a Data Scientist who lives inside the beltway but ignores politics (the normal business of DC) favoring technology instead. He is currently working to finish his PhD at the University of Maryland where he studies machine learning and distributed computing. His lab does have robots (though this field of study is not one he favors) and, much to his chagrin, they seem to constantly arm said robots with knives and tools; presumably to pursue culinary accolades. Having seen a robot attempt to slice a tomato, Benjamin prefers his own adventures in the kitchen where he specializes in fusion French and Guyanese cuisine as well as BBQ of all types. A professional programmer by trade, a Data Scientist by vocation, Benjamin's writing pursues a diverse range of subjects from Natural Language Processing, to Data Science with Python to analytics with Hadoop and Spark.

Rebecca is a data scientist at the U.S. Department of Commerce Data Service. She specializes in data visualization for machine learning and has given several talks related to improving the model selection process with visualization.

Tony is the founder of District Data Labs and focuses on applied analytics for business strategy. He has published a book on practical data science, and has experience with hands-on education and data science curricula.

Around four-thirty, Mike and the kids had gone into town for a video movie. Their little ones were chatting excitedly about which film to choose.

This is how Rebecca would always remember them. They were gone now, all of them, and only she was left to go on.

With Christmas only a week away, Rebecca was miserable. Then, a letter came from Mike's Aunt Edna in Minnesota. Mike had mentioned her a few times during their marriage but she had never met Edna. This is a must read!

This is a lovely story. It holds your attention. The characters are so well woven together. I read it quickly and immediately reread it. There is so much description of the people, places, homes, situations. Hard to believe this is her first book. I am anxiously waiting for her next book.

I liked this book. I took it on my vacation to read in the evenings. It is the type of book that you sit down with a hot cup of coffee and snuggle into a couch and spent quality time. I would recommend for a good read to anyone who is looking for this kind of book.
