Scarce book about some beautiful climbs and wilderness areas

This book is out of print but about the only guide book that covers this area. I used to do an annual trip to Bart Dome for a three day easy backpack trip and we'd backpack in (3-4hrs) then climb two 1/2 days and one full day. Some climbs you could belay from your sleeping bag and there's a spring about 100-150ft from the rock, it is a beautiful isolated piece of wilderness, great for a group of up to about 16 climbers. The author Greg and I used to co-lead this annual trip. We'd leave a double rope top rope set up on a 5.9 route and at night (no lights allowed) would race up it and see who could climb it the fastest. At about midnight a zillion huge millipedes covered the rock and it would startle you when you grabbed one of them thinking it was a hand hold, or your foot would slip if you squished one with your foot... wheeeeeee! Ran into Allen Steck (co-author, 50 Classic Climbs) one trip at Bart. He was very lucky as the day before on the route he climbed, I led a pitch that had no anchor yet so I ran out of rope and had to downclimb 50ft with no pro, bring up Greg so he could install the anchors and then we could finish the climb.

Easter weekend we'd lead a trip to where else... Easter Wall. We'd run into a huge rattlesnake each year there... Good times. Climbers looking for areas for 1st ascents might want to check out this book as there's plenty of new route potential in some of the areas. Okay, it's not the best, most detailed guide book, but it's the only book to this lightly visited area.

Hard to find climbs

Overall a good book of an area without a lot of info. Better photos w/ route overlays or more topos would be useful. Although the idea of keeping more adventure in climbing and thus finding your own way as outlined in the intro is nice to find in a guidebook.

CARY COOPER is Distinguished Professor of Organizational Psychology and Health and Pro Vice Chancellor at Lancaster University, England. He was Founding Editor of the Journal of Organizational Behavior, Editor of the journal Stress and Health, President of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and Chair of the think tank The Sunningdale Institute in the UK's National School of Government. He has a number of Honorary Doctorates from universities and received an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians. Professor Cooper was honoured with a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in 2001, and was elected as Chair of the Academy of Social Sciences in 2009.

Thorough treatment of employee morale

I read this book in preparation for an advanced workshop on employee engagement and felt it provided excellent groundwork for this and related topics. David Bowles has the combined precision of an academic and facile mind of a practitioner which makes his material both accessible and relevant to the workplace. You can read this book front to back, or like me, dive in anywhere and find excellent material in a well-framed context.

I especially liked the author's use of his experience and authenticity in presenting concepts from the field. He sorts out ideas that (in my opinion) have not been given enough scrutiny. This is an intelligent read and facilitates deeper reflection on how we link people factors to organization success.

Beyond "touchy-feely HR"

Having worked in this area for many years, I was thrilled to find this book. Much of the work of HR has been dismissed as being touchy-feely or positioned as unnecessary costs to an organization. Bowles and Cooper summarize an impressive collection of research that supports the assertion that morale is a proven DRIVER of organizational performance, both in the public and private sector, positively affecting customer satisfaction, financial results and even worker health. This book should convince even the biggest doubters. And, it's a great tool for HR to use to help gain buy-in from their leadership regarding the importance of elevating employee morale, particularly in the aftermath of the "Great Recession."

good book, but arrived damage

Let me start off by saying that I'm very pleased with the content of the book itself, and my issue (which is why I give it four stars) is only with the condition of the book. I purchased this book *brand new* from -Daily Deals- but the edges were badly warped and bent. See my attached photos. I'm not sure at what point that happened, whether in packaging or during shipping, but I was very disappointed in such a lovely book being damaged.

However on the inside, everything is fine. The paper and images are high quality. Its quite thick, and the amount of content you get very worth it - a breadth of illustrations, some progress images, and sketches. I like the size of both the book and the images because I can soak in all the details, I've found that some artists make very small artbooks, and I understand it may be due to financial constraints, but I appreciate this one. I like that there is a good balance of accompanying text to go with the images (not all have text) on Jon Foster's life and process. If you love his artwork and are looking for inspiration I highly recommend this book, just be wary of the seller/courier you choose.

Too good for words - just get it!

The postman arrived about an hour ago. I opened the parcel, the book and got lost in Jon's worlds.
I just shut it and I felt need to get this out now.
I first got hooked by Jon's art as I read Liz Williams' Inspector Chen novels. His covers are amazing. Before starting the novels, you are pulled into a world you wouldn't imagine.
My compliments also go to Underwood Books, the publisher. What a wonderful book, good paper, terrific reproduction quality!
Now to Jon's art. Like film stills each picture tells a story, moves like the wind and/or crackles like a rusty robot. You're there, in the tree with the kid amidst the red and golden leaves, next to the sizzling dragon, in a boat in the storm during the revolution, fighting the zombies as part of a hot-babe team. The list goes on and on.
Clearly influenced by the timeless classic masters in painting and illustration, Jon Foster has developed his own terrific style. No matter what material, oil or digital, which assignment, for National Geographic, Lucas Film, Books of Magic and tons of others, every single picture will fascinate you and pull you in as they do me.
If you would want to compare him - which I wouldn't cause he is entirely his very own terrific self, but still, if, then sometimes Vermeer and Rembrandt come to mind, or Ashley Wood, Kent Williams, even a hint of Frank Frazetta. But, as I said, don't, don't compare, just enjoy.
Perfect compositions, wonderful lighting, well chosen moments and characters - no flaws, except... please more of his terrific work.
