About the Author

MARK A. ALTMAN has been hailed as "the world's foremost Trekspert" by the LOS ANGELES TIMES. Altman is a former journalist for such publications as THE BOSTON GLOBE, CINEFANTASTIQUE and GEEK. A Lot of Opinions

Growing up in the seventies, I fell in love with Star Trek watching the reruns on TV. Even after the success of Star Wars, I was always a Star Trek guy. Now that it is Star Trek’s 50th anniversary year, the show is getting a lot of attention. Among that attention are two books that claim to be “the complete, uncensored, unauthorized oral history of Star Trek”. This is the first of them.

Though this book claims to focus on “the first 25 years”, it cheats a bit. It would more accurately claim to be the book that covers the series of the original cast. Thus, it covers the original series and the movies through Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country but it ignores Star Trek: The Next Generation, which I assume is covered in the second book even though it began broadcast in 1987. It’s a sensible division to make.

Assuming that the person reading this is interested in Star Trek to begin with, there are two things that will likely determine whether or not this book is enjoyable. First, do you like reading lengthy interview excerpts from various people? Second, how much do you worship Gene Roddenberry?

Essentially, this book is a giant collection of interview excerpts of people both major and minor in the history of the series. This has become a popular approach to the history of pop culture products, having previously been done for SNL and MTV, for example. It has its pleasures, giving a multitude of voice to people who were there and involved, sometimes bringing to the fore people wrongly forgotten and sometimes doing the same for people better left forgotten. It’s surprising how little there is from the cast, however. But it does feel like a series look behind the scenes.

Also, Gene Roddenberry comes across very poorly in this book. He has his fans, obviously, but many of the voices here drive home how difficult he was to work with and how close he often came to destroying Star Trek. Though the idea for the series was definitely Roddenberry’s, there is a lot of commentary on how many of the best development was done by Gene L. Coon and others. Many people point out that, despite a long career, Star Trek was Roddenberry’s only real success and he used it as a cash cow for most of his life. It is a blow to people who think of Roddenberry as a giant.

Still, if you keep in mind that this is a book of mostly opinion and little fact, it is illuminating on how Star Trek came to the screen and kept coming back over and over despite being on the verge of disappearing forever many times. It is definitely worth a read.

No Brainer for TOS Fans

First off, let me say this is a MUST READ for any Star Trek fan. I've read all the "These Are the Voyages" volumes, and thought I knew everything there was to know regarding the original (and best!) Star Trek. Boy, was I wrong. You really get a soup to nuts retelling of the production, writing, and personalities behind the most amazing television franchise in history.

It was especially nice to read about the very unsung Gene Coon, the stoic stewardship of Robert Wise, the egotistical (warranted) absolute genius of Nick Meyer. It was also very heartwarming to read about what gentlemen Ricardo Montalban and DeForest Kelley were to everyone they encountered. In addition, this book brings you some great behind the scenes of the animated series, and the early fanzine and convention scene.

I was a little worried while reading the forwards by the authors that they were going to jam their personal politics down my throat, but after getting past those parts, I just couldn't put the book down.

I could go on, but I'll just close by saying if you consider yourself a Trekkie (or Trekker...), this is a must have.

Amazingly Good Read

Loved this book. It manages to weave a coherent story from the disparate soundbites of the cast, crew and others becoming something of a page turner. I learned a lot from this book, especially about how TV and movies were made in the 60's and 70's.
It also becomes kind of entertaining (and a little sad) when you read the seemingly incessant bitching about one another from the cast and crew. Let's just say there was clearly a lot of competition going on there!
Easily the best book I've read for a long time, and I'm just in awe of the amount of research that must have been needed to put this together. I can't wait to read about the next twenty-five years!

A bit pricey, but worth it.

It was very pricey, but it went into depth about his life, and how the printing press worked ect. My daughter, who is 12 yo did a paper on him. Overall I'd rate it 4 stars (Because of the price)!

About the Author
George S. Morrison is Professor of Early Childhood Education in the Department of Teacher Education and Administration, and a Next Generation Course Redesign Faculty Fellow in the College of Education at the University of North Texas. He teaches courses in early childhood education and teacher education to undergraduate and graduate students. Professor Morrison earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Washington and Jefferson College, a Masters in Elementary Education from California State College of Pennsylvania, and an Ed. D. in Elementary and Early Childhood Education from the University of Pittsburgh. He is an experienced public school teacher and principal and has supervised student teachers. In addition to the University of North Texas, Dr, Morrison has been a professor at Edinboro University Pennsylvania and Florida International University.

 

Dr. Morrison’s accomplishments include a Distinguished Academic Service Award from the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Outstanding Service and Teaching Awards from Florida International University, and the College of Education Faculty Excellence Teaching Award from the University of North Texas. A best-selling author, his other textbooks include Early Childhood Education Today, 12th ed. (also translated into Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, and Malay); Teaching in America, 5th ed.; Education and Development of Infants, Toddlers, and Preschoolers; The World of Child Development; The Contemporary Curriculum; and Parent Involvement in the Home, School, and Community.

 

A popular author, speaker, and presenter, Professor Morrison serves on the editorial boards of Annual Editions: Early Childhood; the International Journal of Early Childhood Education, and is a Senior Contributing Editor for the Public School Montessorian. He contributes his opinions and ideas to a wide-range of publications. The focus of his speaking engagements and presentations include the future of early childhood education, the globalization of early childhood education, the changing roles of teachers, the influence of contemporary educational reforms on education, and the application of best practices to early childhood education. Professor Morrison also lectures, conducts seminars, and gives keynotes addresses on topics of early childhood education in Thailand, Taiwan, China, South Korea, and the Philippines. He and his graduate and undergraduate students present regularly at the Annual Convention of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Currently, Professor Morrison’s scholarship focuses on course re-design, blended learning, early childhood teacher professional development, early childhood curriculum development, early literacy and reading, faith-based early childhood programs, and cross-cultural/national early childhood programs.

I wish there were more books with this perfect blend of action, a little romance, and a kick a** heroine!

I haven't found a series this enjoyable ever. Loye creates amazing characters and fast paced plot lines that keep your attention throughout the entire story. I love learning more about Valkyrie and seeing the struggle of being a bada** female and all the prejudices that come with it. The chemistry between the two main characters felt authentic and made me feel a part of their story. I loved seeing Dani again as well as Jake. Their story was the first book, and I kinda fell in love with them previously. But this second book was just as enthralling and special.

Looking forward to the books! Five stars for sure! Now, I'm gonna go read these two books again while I wait for the next release...

The Overlook by Michael Connelly: A review

It begins with Harry Bosch, newly reassigned to Homicide Division of the LAPD, getting a call from his lieutenant in the middle of the night. A body has been found on the Mulholland overlook. It is a man who had been shot execution-style with two bullets to the back of the head. The body was found next to his car which had its trunk left open. On the floor of the trunk, indentations in the carpet showed that something very heavy and square had been positioned there, but whatever it was is now gone.

Bosch and his new partner, Ignacio Ferras, are assigned to the case, but very soon the FBI shows up. It develops that the heavy thing which had been carried in the car's trunk was a lead "pig" which contained radioactive cesium. The murdered man was a medical physicist who worked with several hospitals that handled radioactive medical material. The investigation reveals that, at the last hospital he visited, he took the hospital's entire supply of the material. He left a note in the safe explaining what he had done.

Prior to his visit to the hospital, the victim had been sent an email with an attached picture of his wife, naked and tied up on their bed at home. The sender of the email told him that she was being held hostage and would be tortured, raped, and killed if he did not deliver the radioactive cesium to a designated location. He did as he was told but then he was shot and killed and the cesium taken. The police found his wife exactly as depicted in the photograph but otherwise unharmed.

The tug-of-war over the case begins almost immediately. To Harry, it is a murder case, one he is determined to solve. To the FBI and the rest of the federal government, it is a potential terrorist case. The amount of cesium involved could do untold damage to the city and its population.

One of the FBI agents on the case is Bosch's former lover, Rachel Walling, which just complicates matters further. The usual bureaucratic territorial struggles that seem to occur in every Bosch mystery ensue. Cooperation between the agencies and the LAPD is meager. Often the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing.

Harry, though, doggedly sticks to his murder case on the theory that if they find the murderer, they'll find the cesium. And, anyway, he isn't entirely convinced on the terror angle. He thinks there might be another motive for the murder.

I found The Overlook to be atypical Connelly in that the telling of it seemed a bit disjointed. I read afterward that the story had been serialized in a magazine originally, so perhaps that accounts for my impression that it just wasn't quite as smooth as the usual Connelly mystery.

On the whole, though, it was a good story, a good read. Even second-rate Connelly is better than most mystery writers can offer.

I am hooked

As a middle aged, third generation Angelino, who is a private investigator, once worked at a newspaper, was married to a cop and worked with several retired cops & FBI there are several things I like about this series.

I love that this man knows, understands and good and bad, loves our city and really LA is more than the city itself, it is an area, a very large area. I don’t find this is often the case with most fiction books I have read that take place here.

He is pretty accurate with police procedure, investigation, newspapers, the history of LA, how police are, the politics and how it feels to investigate. In this book little things thrown in like the huge bonus the contractor received for getting the 10 open ahead of schedule and the octopus in San Pedro killing itself are true and give a feeling of authenticity. Although there were things that did not make sense and I questioned I can’t help but love Bosch. I am reading this series in order and I am waiting to see if he brings up less known things about LAPD and expands the areas he works in.

Short, But Entertaining

Nowadays, with my mind like a sieve, if I don't review a book as soon as I've read it, I might as well not bother.

Having just finished this book, I will have to say that I enjoyed it. Some people didn't like it because it was short, but this is exactly why I did like it. If you take away all the padding that Connelly and most other authors put in their novels, most of them would be this short. So, for me, this was refreshing for him not to have so much non-essential crap.

One of the reasons I like this author is his ability to come up with plot twists that I never saw coming. I really hate to figure things out, and enjoy being surprised. I've read all his books in sequence, and this is the only one in which I figured it out. There were still a couple of surprises, but I knew who was responsible for the doctor's death early on.

This wasn't Connelly's best, but it was still entertaining, and I'm glad I ignored some of the one or two-star reviews, and read it anyway.

In this respect, the study breaks with existing accounts of the subject, insofar as it presents Scots, English and the other languages used by Burns not as fixed, empirically-observable entities, but as ideas that were revised and remade through the poet’s work.

Focusing on Burns’s poems, songs, letters, prefaces, and glossaries, the book pays special attention to the complex ways in which the author engaged with such issues as phonology, grammar, and the naming of languages. The Burns who emerges from this book is not the marginal figure of traditional accounts—an under-educated poet alienated from the philological mainstream—but rather a well-informed thinker who, more than any other contemporary writer, embodies the creative linguistic spirit of the eighteenth century.

In this fascinating study, Broadhead presents a picture of Burns that is far removed from the rustic self-educated Scottish peasant who used the Scottish dialect in his poetry because he was not sufficiently sophisticated in his use of English. . . .Broadhead takes a 21st-century sociolinguistic approach to show that Burns not only had great command of both English and Scots, but also was a master linguist who manipulated different registers and dialects in his poetry. The author presents his argument in his coherent introduction; in the five chapters that follow, he focuses on different aspects of Burns's use of language in his poetry. Writing primarily for those conversant with literary criticism, the author includes easy-to-understand explanations of the linguistic concepts he uses and a wealth of examples from the poetry itself to illustrate his argument effectively.
