Female Intelligence: Women and Espionage in the First World War, by Tammy M. Proctor

When the Germans invaded her small Belgian village in 1914, Marthe Cnockaert’s home was burned and her family separated. After getting a job at a German hospital, and winning the Iron Cross for her service to the Reich, she was approached by a neighbor and invited to become an intelligence agent for the British. Not without trepidation, Cnockaert embarked on a career as a spy, providing information and engaging in sabotage before her capture and imprisonment in 1916. After the war, she was paid and decorated by a grateful British government for her service.

Cnockaert’s is only one of the surprising and gripping stories that comprise Female Intelligence. This is the first history of the female spies who served Britain during World War I, focusing on both the powerful cultural images of these women and the realities, challenges, and contradictions of intelligence service. Between the founding of modern British intelligence organizations in 1909 and the demobilization of 1919, more than 6,000 women served the British government in either civil or military occupations as members of the intelligence community. These women performed a variety of services, and they represented an astonishing diversity of nationality, age, and class. From Aphra Behn, who spied for the British government in the seventeenth century, to the most well known example, Mata Hari, female spies have a long history, existing in juxtaposition to the folkloric notion of women as chatty, gossipy, and indiscreet.

Using personal accounts, letters, official documents and newspaper reports, Female Intelligence interrogates different, and apparently contradictory, constructions of gender in the competing spheres of espionage activity.

Review

“How did women's work contribute to the propagation of war, and impact their own changing relation to the nation-state? How did women themselves, their contemporaries and popular culture represent their war work in gendered terms? Tammy Proctor addresses these significant questions in her intriguing study of women spies. As Proctor shows, women's substantial work for the developing British intelligence service belied the figure of the treacherous and seductive woman spy.”
-Angela Woollacott, author of On Her Their Lives Depend: Munitions Workers in the Great War

“A useful and engaging history of women in the British intelligence service during World War I. The book is an important contribution to the history of British intelligence and sheds light on the unglamorous reality of a highly romanticized aspect of women's work.”
-American Historical Review

“Retells forgotten stories and unearths new evidence of intrepid female field agents. . . . Proctor’s archival discoveries hint at countless small acts of audacity and defiance. . . . Thanks to books like this one, the history of female espionage—from Aphra Behn to Elizabeth Van Lew to Lotus Blossum to Stella Rimington—is slowly being filled out.”
-London Review of Books

“In Female Intelligence, Tammy Proctor attempts to rescue female spies from cliches that classed them as either sexual predators or martyred virgins, manipulators or dupes, heartless vamps or emotional basket cases.”
-New Yorker

“This engaging and intelligent study of women in espionage adds to our understanding of the experience of women during the First World War and of the legacy of their work, both mythic and real. Proctor carefully explores why the image of the female “spy seductress”—notably the iconic Mata Hari—has endured and uncovers the largely unknown history of this pivotal generation of women intelligence workers.”
-Susan R. Grayzel, author of Women’s Identities At War: Gender, Motherhood, and Politics in Britain and France during the First World War

Just starting to read this book. It seems to fit the genre that I am interested in, especially women who are/were at war and what they did. Looking forward to finishing it.

If that faucet drips one more time...
By kime
Ever wonder how a toilet works? Yep, you push down on the handle and magic happens. then late one night the water in the toilet mysteriously starts to run. A ghost! Basic Plumbing will explain how it works and how you can fix everyday plumbing problems. And it is not brain surgery! That leaky faucet? Once you understand how it works the mystery is gone and it's no big deal to fix it. Even if you never attempt to turn a wrench or screw driver at plumbing the information in this book is invaluable. Where else can you get a fundamental education in plumbing for a few bucks?

Good coverage, well illustrated
By Jim Grey
I bought this book in hopes of becoming somewhat competent with the plumbing problems I regularly encounter at home. This book helped me tremendously. It began with a simple explanation of how plumbing systems work, and then moved to a discussion of pipe types and tools. Then it got to business explaining how to join pipe and perform typical repair and maintenance tasks. The book does a good job of telling you what to do second if the first attempt to fix a problem doesn't work -- such as what to do when plunging the sink doesn't clear a clog. This is particularly valuable.
The author writes clearly and simply, without talking down to his novice audience. I felt like I was getting solid, expert advice from a friend.

for BEGINNERS, not for professionals.
By Victor L. Nazaire
If you are a Beginner in Plumbing like me, this well illustrated book is for you !

No more than 128 pages, with a Glossary on only 2 pages , an index on one page and the rest of the book is well illustrated ( color photos or drawings or tables on each and every page ).

Eight chapters : 1 Home Plumbing Systems, 2 Plumbing Tools & Materials, 3 Working with Pipe, 4 Emergency Repairs, 5 Repairing Faucets, 6 Repairing Sinks, 7 Repairing Toilets, 8 Replacing Fixtures.

The language is easy to understand for a non-techie or a Do It Yourself BEGINNER; here is an example . What is a Ballcock ? " a valve inside the toilet tank that automatically fills the tank to a preset level when the toilet is flushed; there are three common types of ballcocks: ...."

Here is another . What is a valve ? " a device that controls the flow of water through a pipe "

Most of the projects are for projects allowed by the local or national codes .

The steps to go through are clearly indicated and the fonts for the text are 12 or 14 , not tiring for your eyes.

Even the photos for the tools and materials are shown.

you can't go wrong. BUY the slim but effective text.

The Norton Anthology of World Religions: Volume 1: Hinduism, Buddhism, Daoism; Volume 2: Judaism, Christianity, IslamFrom Jack Miles

A landmark work in which the six major, living, international world religions speak to readers in their own words.

This magisterial Norton Anthology, edited by world-renowned scholars under the direction of Pulitzer Prize winner Jack Miles, offers a portable library of more than 1,000 primary texts from the world’s major religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, and Daoism (Volume 1); Judaism, Christianity, and Islam (Volume 2). The anthology brings together foundational works―the Bhagavad Gita, the Daodejing, the Bible, the Qur'an―with the writings of scholars, seekers, believers, and skeptics whose voices over centuries have kept these religions vital. To help readers encounter strikingly unfamiliar texts with pleasure, this Norton Anthology provides accessible introductions, headnotes, annotations, pronouncing glossaries, maps, illustrations, and chronologies. It also includes a dazzling general introduction by Jack Miles that questions whether religion can be defined and illuminates how world religions came to be acknowledged and studied, absorbed and altered, understood and misunderstood.

For readers of any religion or none, The Norton Anthology of World Religions opens new worlds that, as Miles writes, invite us all "to see others with a measure of openness, empathy, and good will…In that capacity lies the foundation of human sympathy and cultural wisdom."

Comprehensive Guide to World Religions
By Mary Wendell
The Norton Anthology of World Religions explores the six major living world religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Daoism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. If you’re looking for a quick reference guide, you may want to keep looking, because this book is a two-volume, 4448 page tome that weighs in at nearly eight pounds!

Pulitzer Prize winner Jack Miles heads up a team of scholars with the goal of exploring each major religion with as large a scope as possible, which means including not only the voices within each religion, but dissident voices as well. If you’re a member of a particular religious community, you may find things you disagree with. If you’re a student of world religions you will probably appreciate the inclusion of both scholars and skeptics throughout, as this helps to paint the broadest picture.

While most of the material is delivered about each religion “in its own words”, the editors have taken the time to, as they say, “throw a very wide net” that excerpts everything from hip-hop artist RZA’s The Wu-Tang Manuel to George Harrison’s The Inner Light. Religion is not one-dimensional and including these voices makes for a more interesting exploration.

The Anthropology of God
By Plato
This collection of essays on world religions will be remain a classic for the coming century, based on solid scholarship, insightful essays, and embracing a wider, receptive understanding of the multitude of faiths that have guided humanity for millennia. Volume I addresses Hinduism, Buddhism, and Daoism --though these latter two ways of life are not theistic, of course. Volume II encompasses peoples of the Book: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. While other ways of life & faith have been omitted in this collection, such as Jainism and Mormonism, they might await a third volume in the series. In an era of deep animosity among the different religious advocates and their secular detractors, this collection serves at the very least a valuable anthropological purpose.

Indentured Freedom: Owned by the Vampire, by Candace Blevins

Teresa has lived a rough life, and is more beaten-down-dog than powerful wolf when she arrives at the Rolling Thunder Motor Hotel looking for work.

The MC gives her a job, but no one is especially happy about it.

Until a vampire walks in, and is drawn to her mouth-watering scent. And blood.

Warning:Dark erotica, dubious consent, and a vampire who isn't afraid to dole out extreme punishments to get his point across.

Indentured Freedom is unapologetic erotica. It has a story and a plot, but it isn't a romance.

Hook, line and sinker...
By Jaycee
I feel the need to begin his review with a rejoinder to the blurb/warning, in that, my personal definition of 'erotica' exclusively contains highly stimulating themes revolving around an isolated event/life, as well as self-absorbed, self involved characters with few if any redeeming qualities. Dark erotica, goes places you might not be completely comfortable with, but invariably leaves the reader nary a trace of warm/fuzzy, never mind HEA.

Indentured Freedom, like its predecessor novellas from the paranormal worlds of Ms. Blevins' imagination, *are* erotic; make no mistake, and may push your comfort zone. But the characters, to whom readers have previously been introduced, are not without deep merit. These particular novella interludes may not be the ultimate HEA for these particular characters, but they do serve as invaluable connect-the-dots to coming events in the series while nurturing characteristic development of a particular supernatural species.

And then there are the characters themselves. Gavin is a powerful, and blessedly, an unapologetic vampire. His purpose is his Master, his power and his "people". In this amazing world, these traits are innate with the powerful, supernatural beings. By definition, they are going to be...more. But there is also heart and soul in this man, and a reader does not have to read between the lines to find it. Even in the events with Teresa/Bambi/Queenie, he seeks to discover the essence of "her" and to entreat her informed consent for the life to which she may be committing herself. She may not be the potential mate to which even Gavin refers in the story, but she is not a "nothing" to him either, and I personally sense whatever Teresa discovers in herself over the course of her servitude, will completely reform her life and her role in it. And the architect of that change will have been Gavin.

Teresa herself may be down enough to be at rock bottom, but she is in *no* way, out. From the beginning of her encounter with Gavin to her ultimate decision, she is given the unvarnished truth and the Freedom to make her own decision. She seeks and accepts advice from protectors within the RTMC, and from The Abbott himself. I do not believe it ever crosses Ms. Blevins' considered imagination, to create a wimpy, indecisive female character and Teresa is no exception, despite her position within the hierarchy.

Nope. This most definitely does not fit my personal bill for dark erotica. It *does* fit my bill for a character rich tie-in to elements of the main series. It does fit my bill for providing reader-insights into the characteristics of the vampire species within an amazingly constructed and highly involved supernatural world, and quite uniquely, does so in a manner that avoids distracting but essential narrative were it in a series novel. Instead we come to understand character motivations in a rich, stand-alone story. Infinitely more satisfying this way.

And finally, it does fit my bill for a warm/fuzzy. Not that these two in particular find a personal HEA together. But because you know that they both ultimately will. Because you know that there is a good being inside who *will* find their personal fulfillment but will be true to their nature in the doing. And because you know that the journey for both of them is going to be over-the-top wild and imaginative, and because you just can't NOT be there to watch it happen!

So. Is it erotic? Most assuredly, but its not my definition of erotiCA.

Is it dark? Its unapologetic. But its true and honest and in full consideration of both characters and of who/what they are by nature.

For me, as always, it moved the story lines along and developed potential for future stories along the way. But mostly, it just enriched this world in which a reader so easily becomes submerged, and for a short time, took me there. Hook, line and sinker.

Dark, erotic and fascinating paranormal story.
By carocaro
This story was a free read, courtesy of Candace Blevins...and in hope of my honest review...here it is.

Theresa, later renamed Queenie, at the start is a lone, downtrodden werewolf, who's been taken in by the Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Club, and is working as a prostitute for them and herself after her lifetime of cruelty and abuse with another pack Alpha.

Gavin, powerful, long lived, a highly intelligent and aware vampire, and second only to The Abbott, head of this region's vampire clan. He uses the RTMC prostitutes for feeding and sexual purposes. He senses and sees Theresa.

Through their senses they are attracted to each other, but in a use and be used, slave/Master situation, no erotic romance here. His needs are for food, someone to hurt to his sadistic and sexual satisfaction come what may. Her needs, to serve...but also with hope of future independence and place in her society. There is an honesty to each other in their story.

The interrogation scenes are torturous, and at times vicious, the control, feeding and sexual links are depraved, but also highly erotic in the dark ways vampirism and werewolves can evoke in us. There is a sharing and use of slaves by other invited vampires and one mnage scene elucidating such.

This has a story, but is a complex scene setting too.
I'm hoping this was the start of their stories and time together, I want to read more about them, and found this story far too short to do them justice. I like the way Candace is adding her own rules to the ever growing mythology of the vampire and werewolf subgenres within the paranormal umbrella. But this is a series, whether Gavin & Queenie/Theresa are the focus in future stories, we the readers can hope and wait and see. But I for one wanted more!

Four stars from me.

Good
By Angela
I was given this book for an honest review

This was a pretty good book it was no romance it was dark erotica and I loved reading it. Gavin is a thousand year old vampire who is second in command to The Abbott. He goes to the Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Club to have sex and feed from a prostitute he went looking for Belinda when she was busy when he see's Teresa he has to have her. Teresa is a she-wolf who has been through a lot she was used an abused by her former Alpha and his friends she came to the club looking for work and although they had Randall talk to her she decided not to join his pack. Gavin realized that Teresa was trained to handle the things that he likes to do so he makes her in offer to stay with him for a week he wants her to be his slave. The sex scenes in this book were hot and dark Gavin was very hard on Teresa this book had m/m and menage scenes and loved reading about it all. Gavin makes her an offer for long term commitment to him and when she leaves him she will be rich and will be able to take care of herself. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading more book in this series.

A "MUST" for the beginning Delphi programmer.
By Blue Chip
"Programming Principles Explained". That sums up this book. I am a freshman programmer. I have had two semesters of Turbo Pascal 7.0. An instructor of mine suggested I advance to Delphi. I bought Delphi 5 (Professional) at the student discount. The book included with Delphi was over my head. I found and purchased this book. It takes you from ground zero to the top using a variety of practical application exercises. If you are a novice who is interested in Delphi and RAD (Rapid Application Development), this is the book you need. It is definitely worth the price. The book is well written, easy to read, includes plenty of code examples, and makes you utilize the many different tools that Delphi has to offer. The authors did a wonderful job of providing end of chapter quizzes and practical application exercises to strengthen what was learned in working through the chapter. Buying this book is not something you will regret.

EXCELLENT FOR FRESHMAN PROGRAMMERS
By Blue Chip
I have two semesters of Turbo Pascal 7.0. In those two semesters I had limited exposure to Object Oriented Programming. This book is excellent if you have the basic programming skills (variables, constants, loops, program structure, etc.) and nothing else. I purchased Delphi 5 (Professional). This book and it's examples all work with this version. If you are a newbie (like me), inexperienced and unsure (like me), this is the book for you. It is definitely worth the money. The chapter quizzes and exercises require you to review and practice the things you learned throughout the chapter. It is not written in "technical terms". You will learn how to apply everything from an array to a record using delphi. If you have the desire to make professional looking windows applications with nothing but the basic programming skills, then buy this book.

Review
This book shows how type has evolved since the dawn of the printing press to the digital age through a collection of 100 typefaces. Seddon also examines the contributions of various typographers and type designers throughout history and breaks the book into sections that show major shifts in typography and printing. These shifts include the invention of movable type, the typesetting machine, phototypesetting, and digital typography. Two-page spreads highlight the typefaces that are relevant to each era. The two-page spread for each typeface contains a font description and the background information about the creator(s), its history, and inspiration of each typeface. This information also includes typefaces that were inspired by the highlighted font and information about the various versions that are available, especially in the instances of types that are digital revivals of historic designs. Each spread includes a few enlarged letters that show the defining characteristics that set
the typeface apart. Examples of the type set in dummy text show body and headline weights, largely depending on the appropriate use of the font in question, to give the reader a sense of how these fonts will work. Finally, Seddon helps the reader by providing a recommendation of which version to use when multiple options are available. The Evolution of Type truly is an evolution of type and is not an exhaustive history of typography. The brief history Seddon includes shows the reader how technology developed and how it has influenced the direction of type through time. This account, despite its brevity, is handled well and helps readers to connect shifts in type design with the major changes in technology. Seddon also explains the classifications of typefaces and how this has been a long point of contention between typographers, graphic designers, and historians because there is no universally accepted method for classifying type. While there are many similarities from one system to
the next, there are also some distinct differences. This is an excellent text for anyone wanting to further their knowledge of how typefaces have evolved in the last 500 years. While it is not a comprehensive history, the selection of 100 types to represent this evolution makes it a manageable text that should not be intimidating to new readers. The most useful part is the inclusion of the variations of each typeface and recommendations of which ones to use and why. It is intriguing that Seddon chose Selva as the 100th typeface, which is a modern interpretation of a blackletter, thereby bringing the text full circle, beginning with Gutenberg's invention, which began with a blackletter font whose design was based on the popular writing of the scribes of his era. (Amanda Horton Technical Communication Journal 2016-02-01)

Graphic designer and type historian Seddon presents the history of typography in 100 typefaces, moving chronologically from movable type to digital. Brief "biographies" of each typeface include descriptions of its origins and influence and annotated depictions with distinguishing features and side-by-side comparisons of subfamilies (e.g., roman versus italic) and versions. Each of the book's four main sections begins with an overview of the time period in printing and biographical sketches of a few of its notable type designers, from Aldus Manutius to Tobias Frere-Jones. For the novice, the book also includes a description of the type classifications and a "type anatomy" that illustrates the differences between a serif and a spur, a loop and a tail... For the general reader as well as the practitioner. (Lindsay Harmon Booklist 2016-02-12)

A perfect reference book! (Natosha Miller Test Try Results Blog 2016-02-16)

This amazing book provides the background of 100 famous, chronologically listed typefaces. It is beautifully illustrated, well written, and authoritative; any student of letterforms will be delighted with the details presented here. Seddon, a freelance graphic designer, provides his personal choices of which versions of these typefaces to purchase, helpful guidance that is, of course, open to debate. Fine books such as this have appeared during each generational change in typographic technology, and this one is suitable for the age of pixels. The choice of which important typefaces of the last 20 years to include will be susceptible to major revision in another 20 years, but no harm is done by taking a stab at it, which the author does skillfully in bringing the work right up to the present. Font designers (such as this reviewer) will learn a great deal... This is a very important work for anyone wishing to learn about the history of fonts, whether one is a student of graphic design
or a professional who chooses typefaces. Highly recommended. All libraries and levels. (S. Skaggs Choice 2016-05-01)

Foreword

Type is a fundamental part of written language in the modern world, and yet it is commonly treated as a static thing. Once cast into metal, it is fixed in time.

But type is alive!

Each typeface has an individual history. It is often born out of specific necessity, influenced by the artistic world in which its creator lives or designed to solve a particular problem. Some typefaces die soon after they fulfill this initial purpose, but others can live on far beyond their designers' intentions. They can travel through design movements, traverse formats and substrates both analog and digital, and evolve into the typographic offspring that we refer to as revivals and reinterpretations. If a typeface survives these journeys it can continue to live on as a tool in the hands of future generations, producing work its creator never imagined.

And just as music has its archetypical artists or composers who represent a given genre (be it classical, blues, folk or rock), so does type. Certain typefaces define their classification or style; they set a standard, becoming the forebears by which all their followers are judged and compared. We know many of these classics well, whether its from the pages of our design-school textbooks (Bodoni, Garamond, Caslon, Futura) or the default font menus on our computers (Gill Sans, Times, Palatino, Helvetica). But how much do we really know about them? What was the context of the design world in which they were drawn? Were they in competition with other typefaces of the time? What life did they live after they were released? How did they survive the transition from metal to film to digital? Did they survive at all? Which typefaces followed in their shadow?

In this book, Tony Seddon makes a daring and worthwhile attempt to answer these questions. The Evolution of Type is a biography of these living things we call typefaces. It tells their individual stories, and while at it, tells the story of typography as a whole.
