Lords of Finance: The Bankers Who Broke the World, by Liaquat Ahamed

Winner of the 2010 Pulitzer Prize

With penetrating insights for today, this vital history of the world economic collapse of the late 1920s offers unforgettable portraits of the four men whose personal and professional actions as heads of their respective central banks changed the course of the twentieth century

It is commonly believed that the Great Depression that began in 1929 resulted from a confluence of events beyond any one person's or government's control. In fact, as Liaquat Ahamed reveals, it was the decisions taken by a small number of central bankers that were the primary cause of the economic meltdown, the effects of which set the stage for World War II and reverberated for decades.

In Lords of Finance, we meet the neurotic and enigmatic Montagu Norman of the Bank of England, the xenophobic and suspicious mile Moreau of the Banque de France, the arrogant yet brilliant Hjalmar Schacht of the Reichsbank, and Benjamin Strong of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, whose faade of energy and drive masked a deeply wounded and overburdened man. After the First World War, these central bankers attempted to reconstruct the world of international finance. Despite their differences, they were united by a common fear--that the greatest threat to capitalism was inflation--and by a common vision that the solution was to turn back the clock and return the world to the gold standard.

For a brief period in the mid-1920s they appeared to have succeeded. The world's currencies were stabilized and capital began flowing freely across the globe. But beneath the veneer of boom-town prosperity, cracks started to appear in the financial system. The gold standard that all had believed would provide an umbrella of stability proved to be a straitjacket, and the world economy began that terrible downward spiral known as the Great Depression.

As yet another period of economic turmoil makes headlines today, the Great Depression and the year 1929 remain the benchmark for true financial mayhem. Offering a new understanding of the global nature of financial crises, Lords of Finance is a potent reminder of the enormous impact that the decisions of central bankers can have, of their fallibility, and of the terrible human consequences that can result when they are wrong.

Amazon Exclusive: Liaquat Ahamed on the Economic Climate

In December 1930, the great economist Maynard Keynes published an article in which he described the world as living in “the shadows of one of the greatest economic catastrophes in modern history.” The world was then 18 months into what would become the Great Depression. The stock market was down about 60%, profits had fallen in half and unemployed had climbed from 4% to about 10%.

If you take our present situation, 16 months into the current recession, we're about at the same place. The stock market is down 50 to 60 percent, profits are down 50 percent, unemployment is up from 4.5% to over 8%.

Over the next 18 months between January 1930 and July 1932 the bottom fell out of the world economy. It did so because the authorities applied the wrong medicine to what was a very sick economy. They let the banking system go under, they tried to cut the budget deficit by curbing government expenditure and raising taxes, they refused to assist the European banking system, and they even raised interest rates. It was no wonder the global economy crumbled.

Luckily with the benefit of those lessons, we now know what not to do. This time the authorities are applying the right medicine: they have cut interest rates to zero and are keeping them there, they have saved the banking system from collapse and they have introduced the largest stimulus package in history.

And yet I cannot help worrying that the world economy may yet spiral downwards. There are two areas in particular that keep me up at night.

The first is the U.S. banking system. Back in the fall, the authorities managed to prevent a financial meltdown. People are not pulling money out of banks anymore—in fact, they are putting money in. The problem is that as a consequence of past bad loans, the banking system has lost a good part of its capital. There is no way that the economy can recover unless the banking system is recapitalized. While there are many technical issues about the best way to do this, most experts agree that it will not be done without a massive injection of public money, possibly as much as $1 trillion from you and me, the taxpayer.

At the moment tax payers are so furious at the irresponsibility of the bankers who got us into this mess that they are in no mood to support yet more money to bail out banks. It is going to take an extraordinary act of political leadership to persuade the American public that unfortunately more money is necessary to solve this crisis.

The second area that keeps me up at night is Europe. During the real estate bubble years, the 13 countries of Eastern Europe that were once part of the Soviet empire had their own bubble. They now owe a gigantic $1.3 trillion dollars, much of which they won’t be able to pay. The burden will have to fall on the tax payers of Western Europe, especially Germany and France.

In the U.S. we at least have the national cohesion and the political machinery to get New Yorkers and Midwesterners to pay for the mistakes of Californian and Floridian homeowners or to bail out a bank based in North Carolina. There is no such mechanism in Europe. It is going to require political leadership of the highest order from the leaders of Germany and France to persuade their thrifty and prudent taxpayers to bail out foolhardy Austrian banks or Hungarian homeowners.

The Great Depression was largely caused by a failure of intellectual will—the men in charge simply did not understand how the economy worked. The risk this time round is that a failure of political will leads us into an economic cataclysm.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Almost all critics praised Lords of Finance for its command of economic history and engaging, lucid prose. Ahamed, noted the New York Times, illuminates wise parallels between the misplaced confidence that spawned the global depression in the 1930s and the illusory calculations of risk that led to the current financial crisis. His compelling biographies also personalize economic history. While critics disagreed about whether lay readers will, in a century's time, care about Norman, Moreau, and Schact, the only negative words came from the Wall Street Journal, which criticized Lords of Finance for an imprecise understanding of the gold standard: "Harrumphing about the ‚gold standard,' Mr. Ahamed reminds me of the fellow who condemned ‚painting' because he had no use for Andy Warhol."

Review
“A magisterial work…As you learn how the world spiraled into depression…you can’t help thinking about the economic crisis we’re living through now.”—The New York Times Book Review

“The rich and charming story of the end of the world.”—Time

“Lords of Finance is highly readable .... That it should appear now, as history threatens to repeat itself, compounds its appeal.”—Niall Ferguson, Financial Times

“There is terrific prescience to be found in [Lords of Finance’s] portrait of times past…[A] writer of great verve and erudition, [Ahamed] easily connects the dots between the economic crises that rocked the world during the years his book covers and the fiscal emergencies that beset us today. He does this winningly enough to make his book about an international monetary horror story seem like a labor of love… Mr. Ahamed does a superlative job of explaining the ever-germane way the problems of one shyster, one bank, one treasury or one economy can set off repercussions all around the globe.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“This absorbing study of the first collective of central bankers is provocative, not least because it is still relevant.”—The Economist

“This is narrative history at its most vivid, an epic portrait of how the predecessors of Ben Bernanke, Jean-Claude Trichet and Mervyn King helped shove economies into the abyss in 1929…His reportorial style has the Barbara Tuchman touch. Learned yet unpretentious, he dips into diaries, letters and cables to pull out evocative vignettes…Central bankers, [Ahamed] says, can resemble Sisyphus in Greek mythology— condemned to roll a boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll down again. Like Alan Greenspan, the four men described here saw their apparent successes melt into failure.”—Bloomberg News

“The parallels evidenced by Ahamed between state of the world financial system then and now add to the fascination of this remarkable achievement in history, biography and analysis.”—Fort Worth Star Telegram

“An outstanding book…[Ahamed] found a fascinating frame for relating global economic history from the beginning of World War I until the dying days of World War II.”—The Houston Chronicle

“[Ahamed’s] protagonists’ high-wire efforts to stave off national bankruptcies furnish Ahamed with plenty of drama to highlight his engrossing analysis of the complexities of monetary policy.”—Publishers Weekly

“Erudite, entertaining macroeconomic history of the lead-up to the Great Depression as seen through the careers of the West’s principal bankers…Spellbinding, insightful and, perhaps most important, timely.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred)

“Books grounded in history sometimes offer an eerie resonance for contemporary readers. Rarely has that statement seemed truer than with Lords of Finance.”—Steve Weinberger, Dallas Morning News

“[A] wonderful new history”—Newsweek

Great way to learn about the politics of international finance
By Stephan Campbell
“Central bankers can be likened to the Greek mythological character Sisyphus,” writes Liaquat Ahamed in Lords of Finance. It’s hard to imagine Alan Greenspan heaving a boulder up a hill, but given that his career ended marred by the gravitational pull of derivatives and a pendulous business cycle, the analogy works. Of course, central bankers like Greenspan are not bound for eternity; in Lords of Finance they retire after rolling their fiscal stones halfway, then take roles as elder statesmen, marry young wives, and suckle personal fortunes while withering into obscurity.

Ahamed’s thesis is that the Great Depression was caused by misguided economic policies implemented by central bankers in Germany, France, England, and America. The book moves chronologically, first describing the politically controversial creation of central banks; then the financial impact of the world’s sudden plunge into the Great War; then the economic “consequences of peace” during post-war reconstruction; and finally the Great Depression and its aftermath.

The book’s subtitle, The Bankers Who Broke the World, implies that blame for the disastrous policies should lie with the nominal policymakers, the central bankers who made up the so-called “Most Exclusive Club in the World”: Benjamin Strong, Emile Moreau, Montagu Norman, and Hjalmar Schacht.

But blaming the central bankers is facile scapegoating. Consider an earnest question posed to an economic advisor by Winston Churchill: “You have been a politician. Given the situation as it is, what decision would you make?”

To the chagrin of a present and dissenting John Maynard Keynes, Churchill follows the advice of the advisor, which leads to economic calamity.

Blaming politicians, too, is shortcoming. To quell speculation in the pre-Depression stock market, Herbert Hoover, the engineer, and Adolph Miller, a Berkeley economist, have their own misguided policy ideas. Ahamed writes of these, “[T]hey had fallen into the first trap of financial officials dealing with complex markets––an excessive level of confidence in their own judgements.”

Lords of Finance shows economic policymaking for what it is: a muddled orgy of ideology, overconfidence, ego, theory, expertise, indicators, populism, vested interests, ignorance, and politics. Though there are individuals who possess the ability to impact financial crises, they are time and time again shackled by doubt, bureaucracy, and institutions. Nearly everyone errs; the boulder rolls down the mountain.

But circumstances have improved. Ahamed concludes by acknowledging the relative stability of the modern financial system––even as the book was published one year into the 2008 financial crisis. The world is better off because of consensus acceptance of the ideas popularized by the infallible John Maynard Keynes and the relative maturity of monetary theory.

For all of the economic insight, some of the work’s most enjoyable reading comes during tangents, when Ahamed drifts from lucid but dry discussion of interest rates and bank behavior into anecdotes about characters. Ahamed thankfully chooses to use footnotes to personify his characters, rather than expound on economic theory, which contributes to the book’s fluency and fun.

Lords of Finance is an excellent resource for anyone interested in economics, finance, and banking, or interested in seeing the Depression-era through a different lens.

Brilliant tour of pre-world war central banking
By amazonuser
Lords of finance unveils the details and nuances of the central bank decisions in the aftermath of World War I and 1929 market crash. The early parts of the book bring history to life with scenes behind the secret Aldrich plan that ultimately resulted in the genesis of Federal Reserve (despite opposition and skepticism from Progressives and Midwestern Republicans, skepticism that has continued to live on 100 years later among contemporary Fed opponents). The psychology behind historical market actions also seems no different from market behavior of our times. We can argue that markets react much more swiftly to news in the Internet era but the length and extent of market reactions follow similar course - moves in 1912, when the US woke to news of a Russian general mobilization causing a 7% drop in Dow, and subsequently in the first half of 1929, when markets initially ignored rising cost of borrowing and Fed rate hikes to continue the bull run. While media and market bulls and bears tussled with the prognosis of market moves, no one could guess the actual exogenous event that would push the domino and lead to the Great Depression: the collapse of Clarency Harty's empire, Bank of England's subsequent rate hike to prevent a knock on effect on sterling, and subsequent liquidation of US stocks by British investors who lost money in Harty's fraudulent scheme. Other parts of the book delve into Pre-World War II German economy, Gold standard, Roosevelt's market plan, British and French central banking and provide brilliant insights. Lords of Finance is a copious research piece and brilliant narration of early 20th century central banking - well deserved Pulitzer

By Gerrit Middelkoop
The book presents a comprehensive picture of the central banking system and the financial woes of the twenties and thirties. The main characters are the central bankers of the UK, USA, Germany and France as well as Milton Keynes. We see the historical events of the Great Depression and the reactions or lack thereof by the bankers. The book provides a wealth of interesting historical and monetary insights and details and gives insights into the lives of the key players of that time, their public image and inadequacy to avoid the disaster of the Great Depression. A great read.

Saturn V Flight Manual, by NASA

Designed by Wernher von Braun and Arthur Rudolph at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, the Saturn V rocket represents the pinnacle of 20th Century technological achievement. The only launch vehicle in history to transport astronauts beyond Low Earth Orbit, the Saturn V delivered 24 men to the moon. To this day it holds records as the tallest (363 feet), heaviest (nearly 7 million lbs.) and most powerful (over 7.6 million pounds-force of thrust) launch vehicle ever produced. It also remains one of the most reliable, achieving 12 successful launches with one partial failure ― the unmanned Apollo 6 which suffered vibration damage on lift-off, resulting in a sub-standard orbit. The Saturn series of rockets resulted from Von Braun’s work on the German V-2 and Jupiter series rockets. The Saturn I, a 2-stage liquid-fueled rocket, flew ten times between 1961 and 1965. A uprated version the 1B carried the first crewed Apollo flight into orbit in 1968. The Saturn V, which first flew in 1967, was a three-stage rocket. The first stage, which burned RP-1 and LOX, consisted of five F-1 engines. The second stage used five J-2 engines which burned LOX and liquid hydrogen (LH2). The third stage, based on the second stage of the Saturn 1B, carried a single J-2. The Saturn V could carry up to 262,000 pounds to Low Earth Orbit and more critically, 100,000 pounds to the Moon. Created by NASA as a single-source reference as to the characteristics and functions of the Saturn V, this manual was standard issue to the astronauts of the Apollo and Skylab eras. It contains information about the Saturn V system, range safety and instrumentation, monitoring and control, prelaunch events, and pogo oscillations. It provides a fascinating overview of the rocket that made “one giant leap for mankind” possible.

Excellent deep over view of The Saturn Five plus
By Dave1938
I am an Aerospace Engineer that worked on the Apollo program at the Kennedy Space Center starting since 1970. I have a copy of the original NASA document that was the basis for this book. I can verify this this book is a very good reference book for the Saturn Five vehicle as well as the Apollo Spacecraft and the KSC facilities which were used to prepare the vehicle for flight. I am currently a Docent volunteer at the Kennedy Space Center Apollo Saturn Five rocket. I take my document with me to verify or refresh my memory while I am performing my Docent function.

Flight manual covers Apollo 8 launch vehicle
By Chuck Corway
This flight manual covers the configuration for Saturn V launch vehicle SA-503, flown for the Apollo 8 mission. All the Saturn Vs flown and currently on static display have minor internal and external variations for each launch. For example, the ullage rocket fairings on the S-IC/S-II interstage (first/second stage) were originally 8 on the first two flight vehicles (Apollos 4 and 6 (SA-501-502)), then reduced to 4 for Apollos 8-14 (SA-503-509), and removed completely for Apollos 15-17 and Skylab 1 (SA-510 throug SA-513; 514 and 515 never flew and became static displays). It won't detract the casual reader at all, and it is recommended for any space buff's library.

Ford's heart is touched by his vivacious assistant -- and his imagination sparked by her knowledge of a strange story that drives them to a small North Carolina town brimming with secrets. There, they will trace the mystery of a woman said to have loved the devil himself...and discover not only the truth about a crime from the past -- but a passion that holds the promise of a new life together.
Jude Deveraux, whose "enchanting and extraordinary" (Chicago Daily Herald) novels have enthralled millions, creates two of her most memorable characters in this powerful bestseller.

From Publishers Weekly
Forget garden-variety ghosts and poltergeists-the devil himself makes an appearance in bestseller Deveraux's latest romantic suspense novel. When famed mystery writer Ford Newcombe loses his beloved wife, Pat, he can't bear the thought of writing without her. Six years later, Ford is moving from one small town to another in an attempt to cure his writer's block when he hears the story of a woman who was murdered because she loved the devil. Fascinated by the tale, he decides that he must investigate it and approaches Jackie, the storyteller, to offer her the job of assisting him. Needing a change of pace, Jackie agrees to accompany him to Cole Creek, N.C., and strange things begin to happen when they arrive-Jackie instinctively knows her way around the town, she begins to have frightening premonitions that come true and the townspeople insist that the devil tale is just a rumor. Not one to give up, Ford continues to investigate and discovers an article about a 20-year-old murder. As he uncovers more gruesome details, he begins to suspect that Jackie may have somehow been involved in or witnessed the murder. Meanwhile, Jackie meets a man who seems too good to be true, who is also interested in the devil story. As Ford and Jackie work their way closer to the truth, it becomes clear that the story about the devil may be horrifically true. Deveraux's writing is sloppy ("I tried to pep Jackie up because she was looking as forlorn as an abandoned puppy"), but her plotting is effective, and she does a superb job of building up to her chilling conclusion.

From Booklist
Ford Newcombe grew up amongst his 11 uncles and their families, never really fitting in with his ne'er-do-well relatives. He met his wife, Pat, in college and she became his muse, helping him become a famous author. But after 21 years of marriage Pat dies, and Ford is at a loss, looking everywhere for the inspiration to begin writing again. He meets Jackie Maxwell, a young woman with a gift for storytelling, and she tells a doozy about a modern-day woman who is stoned because she was seen consorting with the devil. Ford wants to hire Jackie, but she is about to get married. Life has other plans, however, and Jackie ends up traveling with Ford to Cole Creek, North Carolina, the site of the stoning. Jackie recognizes the town, and she and Ford soon realize that she must have been there before, and perhaps witnessed the event. As in her last book, Forever [BKL O 15 02], Deveraux combines romance and the occult in a new and entertaining manner. Patty Engelmann

Stick With What You Know
By A Customer
Why is it that all the good writers i.e. Jude Deveraux, Judith McNaught, Julie Garwood, and Elizabeth Lowell think that they need to "branch out" and take their writing in different directions. The stories about relationships and characters are what sold their books in the first place and it is unfortunate that these women want to concentrate more on the overall plot and sub-characters now. I enjoy a story about 2 main characters and think that that is were these authors are strongest. In this book there where way too many wacky and unbelievable characters who took away from the very under-developed main characters. If you are a long time Jude Deveraux fan I think you will be dissappointed. This is nothing like the magic of books like Sweet Liar or AKISA. Deveraux's strength is in writing a good sit down romance. A romance where you read the book in 3 hours because you just can't put it down. I struggled through this one for three days and had a hard time finishing it. My vote - bring back the fun and excitement of the Taggarts and Montgomerys.

Disappointing for Deveraux
By Wanda Scarpinato
Frankly, this one doesn't live up to standards I have for Deveraux novels. It is interesting but could be BETTER. It is good but could be GREAT. I feel that Ms. Deveraux needed Ford's dead wife Pat to edit this work... and point out the problems she created but didn't solve.
A chapter from Ford's viewpoint; rehash the same happenings from Jackie's viewpoint and create a few new happenings; rehash those new happenings from Ford's viewpoint... well, you get the idea.
We've got a hero(?) who is almost twice his counterpart's age (she's 26 and he's at least 49 (graduated at 22, married for 21 years, wife dead for 6 years = 49+). To work as his assistant and track down a tale of the devil, she up and moves to another state with him to live in a rundown house and doesn't even discuss salary until after they get there (get real Ms. Deveraux). Once there, Ms. Deveraux doesn't get into the "mystery" until almost the last chapters of the book. Then she solves it without telling us any of the details, other than the fact Jackie has a grandmother and that the devil tempts Ford.
Oh, at the end of the book Ford snickers that Jackie now knows why he saves his energy (he supposedly wore out Jackie sexually) - ...

This is NOT a romance novel, but I loved it anyway
By Lesili
I have been reading Jude Deveraux for years, and I just love her writing style and her compelling characters. Both were present in this book.
The plot kept me on the edge of my seat, I love the dark aspects and the mystery. I read it in one sitting, couldn't put it down all day.
However, if you are a romance fan, the romance in this book will probably not be satisfying. There are no love scenes, and not a whole lot of sexual tension. Their romance almost seems like an afterthought to the whole book. But, I wasn't reading it for the romance. I was reading it for the ride, for the mystery and for the characters.
I can't wait for her next one!

Utter waste of money

Profoundly disappointing book. Promises access to material online that no longer exists. Amateurishly written. Provides no real insight into the subject matter. Utter waste of money.

Excellent read! better, deeper sex-life and self-awareness
By Jonathan
i can whole heartedly recommend this to anyone that is interested in helping others explore their submissiveness or for subs who want to learn more about themselves. Kali took me through the training she discussed in this book and it was an eye opening experience... the techniques she discusses in this ebook helped me explore my submissive side and to get ride of the barriers i didn't even realize i was putting up. this has helped my sex life significantly, just in becoming more aware... i've also been able to experience 'sub space' which i had never heard of before and when i did hear about it, discounted it without understanding... but now having experienced this, i have been able to tap into this feeling of peace, calmness and arousal all at the same time... it has been an incredible experience that is hard to describe as it's been both surprising and very valuable... Kali is very talented, knowledgable and has a lot to offer

RIP-OFF!!!
By Misty
This book is disorganized, there is no connecting one part to the other. Hardly a book on hypnosis or control. Even with prior experience you will be hard pressed to make anything in it coherent. The book is for the submissive, no dominant would recommend this drivel. There is a claim to other training if you purchase the book; that is no longer available. WAY overpriced for the information contained within.

"Knox is a writer with a gift for describing the colour of the present moment...she lets her language breathe, lets it speak in revelations rather than explanations" Times Literary Supplement "Her words have the power to dazzle" Independent "Knox's evocation of thirties California is dreamy, and her characters interestingly warped" -- Emma Hagestadt Independent

About the Author
Born in Wellington, New Zealand, Elizabeth is the middle of three sisters.

The Knox family moved around a number of times during Elizabeth s childhood. They lived in Pomare, Wadestown, Waikanae, and Paremata. The sisters were close, and always played imaginary games. By the time Elizabeth was eleven, the games had become one game, an ongoing saga set in another world -- a game she shared with her sisters and several friends. One day, when Elizabeth was sixteen, her father interrupted a discussion the girls were having about the possible results of a secret treaty and said, I hope you re writing some of this down. The idea hadn t occurred to Elizabeth before, and she thought it was a very good one. She, her sisters, and friends began writing letters between their characters and stories about them. Elizabeth enjoyed writing and decided that this -- writing fiction -- was what she wanted to do with her life.

When Elizabeth left her secondary school, Tawa College, which she attended from 1972 to 1976, she took a job as a clerk in the Inland Revenue department in Porirua. While workmates her age were saving for cars, weddings, and overseas travel, Elizabeth saved in order to take eight months off work and write a novel. This first novel, "One Too Many Lives", completed when she was nineteen, was not to be published (though there was kind interest from a number of publishers in New Zealand and the UK). Again Elizabeth went back to work to save money, and at twenty-two took another year off and wrote another novel, "Salamander", which she disliked and put away.

In 1983, Elizabeth went to Victoria University and began a degree in English literature. In 1984 she took Bill Manhire s Original Composition course and began writing "After Z-Hour". Bill Manhire encouraged her to finish it (actually, he told her he d rather see her finish her novel than her degree). "After Z-Hour" was published by Victoria University Press in 1987. The same year, Elizabeth graduated from Victoria University with a B.A. in English literature and was awarded the ICI Young Writers Bursary (now the Louis Johnson Bursary).

Elizabeth Knox has been a full-time writer since 1997. She has published eight novels and three autobiographical novellas. Her best-known book is "The Vintner s Luck", which won the Deutz Medal for fiction in the 1999 Montana New Zealand Book Awards and the 2001 Tasmania Pacific Region Prize. "The Vintner s Luck" has been published in seven languages and is being made into a film by Niki Caro ("Whale Rider; North Country"). Elizabeth s most recent book, "Daylight", was short-listed for Best Book in the South Pacific & South East Asian Region of the 2004 Commonwealth Writers Prize. Elizabeth s first book for young adults, "Dreamhunter: Book One of the Dreamhunter Duet", was chosen as a White Raven by the International Youth Library, and is the winner of New Zealand s prestigious Esther Glen Medal. Its sequel, "Dreamquake", will be published in March 2007.

Elizabeth lives in Wellington with her husband, Fergus Barrowman, and their son, Jack.

The Angel's Cut, a captivating sequel
By David Corbitt
The Angel's Cut is Elizabeth Knox's sequel to her novel, The Vintner's Luck. Zas, the de-winged angel from the Vintner's luck, has outlived his former lover, Jobran, and the new novel finds him in a new century involved in early flight, on a German Zeppelin during WWI on a bombing raid heading to England. The novel follows Zas' life journey as he yearns for his former contact with the angelic aerial world by becoming a stunt pilot and getting involved in the early Hollywood movie community in the 1920's. He rooms with a sought after female screen writer, has an affair with one of Hollywood's most successful but deeply troubled directors who also builds advanced design airplanes during the 1920's. Zas' peculiar and alien character perplexes people. He hides his alien nature by keeping his scars of his wing-ectomy hidden, and his journey as an immortal among mortals is fascinating and didactic. Knox's writing is touching, moving, and insightful with a clear and efficient use of the language. The emotions and anguish are clearly communicated of the turmoil experienced by Zas and the other characters in this story as well as a look inside the Hollywood of the 1920's that hits home as very real and immediate. You will not be disappointed but I suggest you read The Vintner's Luck first.

Not a patch on the original, sadly.
By Michael Maynard
The Vinter's Luck is one of my favourite novels of all time: gorgeous, dark, scandalous, salacious, intoxicating and heretical. This one just never gets me interested, never draws me in, never makes me care...it never gets off the ground.

The device of structuring the novel around winemaking terms worked so much better than structuring it around movies; I don't really know why. Easily the best bit is the epilogue, but apart from that this one is just lumpen.

If you read and loved The Vintner's Luck then you are going to read this obviously...but you probably won't enjoy it as much. Sorry.

Five Mysteries for You to Solve
By Lonnie E. Holder
This collection of mysteries for young adults has existed since 1963 and has been through multiple editions. As far as I can tell, the most recent editions retain the text of the original. There are five mysteries. Each provides sufficient clues to let you have a reasonably good chance at guessing some or all of the solution for each mystery. However, the length of each mystery is such that it can be hard to find the clues.

The opening story is "The Mystery of the Five Sinister Thefts." Jerry Mason is helping his uncle Frank, owner of Clanton's Circus. Jerry is a helper at the circus, doing whatever odd job that needs to done. Jerry returned to the circus from mailing a letter for his uncle Frank to find that something at the circus had changed. He quickly learns that someone has taken one of Madame Winifred's snakes. This theft followed several other thefts, each of items of varying value but none seemingly worth a thief's time.

Jerry tries to figure out why someone would steal the various items, using everything he has seen and heard around the circus. After thinking about the things he knows, Jerry suddenly realizes that he knows exactly who took the various items and why. Can you figure out who took each of the five items and why? Can you figure out where the snake is?

The next story is "The Mystery of the Seven Wrong Clocks." Someone murdered Fritz Sandoz and robbed his store some time before Peter Perkins arrived at the store of his friend. Sandoz was able to modify a number of clocks to provide a clue regarding his murderer. Can you solve the mystery of the wrong clocks before Peter Perkins does?

The third story is "The Mystery of the Three Blind Mice." Nigel Mayfair is a wheelchair bound millionaire. Someone is stealing some of Mayfair's most valuable stamps and Mayfair has asked detective Porterfield Adams to investigate the thefts and hopefully regain the valuable stamps. Porterfield brought son Andy, a stamp collector, as a consultant.

No one, staff or family, likes Mayfair. It would be fair to say that Mayfair has no friends either. There is little surprise and even less grieving when someone shoots Mayfair while Mayfair is sitting in his bed, leaving a mysterious, incomplete sentence as his final words. The large number of people in the house at the time and in the house directly across from Mayfair's house, which is a small castle, makes this mystery a challenge.

I thought this mystery was particularly difficult to solve because the most important clues are subtle. It helps if you read the story twice before reading the conclusion.

In "The Mystery of the Man Who Evaporated," mystery writer Harley Newcomb has apparently disappeared from a locked house. The windows are boarded over and the door is nailed shut as well. The only clue is a mysterious note and footsteps that get smaller and smaller. English teacher and mystery writer Howard Matthews and one of his students, Jeff Landrum, try to figure out what the police could not, the location of Harley Newcomb. Can an English teacher and a student figure out how Harley Newcomb "disappeared" from a house without an exit? Can the pair solve the mystery when the police could not? Perhaps you can solve the mystery before Mr. Matthew and Jeff.

The final mystery is "The Mystery of the Four Quarters." Nick and Bettye Layton find themselves kidnapped by mysterious men. The pair soon discovers that the men are spies looking for information from their father. They also think the spies are crazy because their father is not involved in any kind of military factory or research, but the men have kidnapped the brother and sister, so they know what they want.

Their kidnappers ask Nick and Bettye to tell their father to provide certain information in order to secure their return. Nick and Bettye write notes to their father, carefully reviewed by the head kidnapper. Will Nick and Bettye be able to escape their kidnappers before their father gives it to the kidnappers? There is so much tension!

A number of books that contain short mysteries with sufficient clues to solve the mysteries are available. Of course, this one is from Alfred Hitchcock. My experience has been that a book with Hitchcock's name on it is generally good, and this collection of mysteries is good. I did think that a couple of the mysteries were very difficult to solve. A couple I got reasonably quickly. These stories are good mental exercise and our brains always need a workout. If you enjoy mysteries and you like to be able to try to solve them yourself, this book could be for you.

Enjoy!

A trip down memory lane - a great trip!
By Dom Miliano
Growing up, this was one of my all time favorite books. First, its stories are very well written. They are "solve them yourself" and the cues and clues are both subtle and challenging. By the time I finished reading, I was both a better, more careful reader and a sharper problem solver. Quite an accomplishment for one book.

The seller delivered the book in great shape and it was exactly as advertised. It arrived quickly and it appeared to be "as new" or as new as a nearly 50 year old book could be. I am very pleased and recommend the seller.

This is a time machine for me - taking me back to the best days of my youth - ones with a good book in my hand!

You will enjoy reading this one - if you can find a copy...

"His heart was pounding and he seemed unable to get his breath. He couldn't breathe. He was suffocating already!"
By Mark Louis Baumgart
Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980) became involved in the movies in the late nineteen teens, became a director in 1922 (the uncompleted "Number 13"), published the first (of many) of his anthologies in 1945 ("Suspense Stories"), and published his first juvenile, "Alfred Hitchcock's Solve-Them-Yourself Mysteries", written by Robert Arthur, Jr., in 1963, in January, eleven months before John F. Kennedy was assassinated. In 1963 Hitchcock released "The Birds", and one year later "Alfred Hitchcock And The Three Investigators" (43 books 1964-1987 in American, 150 so far in Germany) started publishing. It was also the eighth year of ten, (1955-1965) for his television series, and in America it was the thirteenth year of America's involvement in Vietnam.

This book was originally published without a dust jacket with the artwork printed directly onto the hard cover, and it contained five novelettes written by Robert Arthur, Jr., and ten full-page, and one double page illustration by one-time Paddington Bear illustrator Fred Banbery (1913-1999). The stories are not your choose-your-own-adventure types, nor are they the Encyclopedia Brown types. They are full-length stories in which the ending is cut off, only to be continued on the next page after giving the reader a chance to solve the story's puzzle.

The first story is the circus story 'The Mystery Of The Five Sinister Thefts' and Jerry Mason is on his way to the small one-ring Clanton's Circus, which has just been bought by Frank Mason who is Jerry's uncle. As he arrives he realizes that the circus is too quiet, and finds that there has been a fifth theft. While each item stolen is of little monetary value, they are of high intrinsic value, with each theft happening over five consecutive nights. This time Winifred the Snake Charmers prize snake has been lifted.

It's clear that these thefts are related to the theft of "The Green Flame" diamond that had been previously stolen from the Museum Of Fine Arts in Millerton, a town the circus had toured through. The story is interesting, and it features a classic MacGuffin, a standard plot device in Hitchcock's movies. I guessed the answer this time around, but you also learn a little about the lost culture of the small circuses. Four stars.

The next story is 'The Mystery Of The Seven Wrong Clocks' and features (continuing character?) Peter Perkins, a professional puzzle and cryptogram writer who teems up head cop Detective Magrue's son to find the killer of Perkins' friend. The problem is based on how a series of seven clocks have been set up by his friend before his murder. I didn't quite get the set up for the solution, but the solution itself is based on the Sherlock Holmes story 'The Case Of The Dancing Men'. Margrue is an obnoxious idiot, and the set-up seems contrived, but in the end, Arthur played fair with the clues, so I can't complain. Four stars.

When is a killer not a killer? The answer is in the next story 'The Mystery Of The Three Blind Mice'. Porterfield Adams is a detective specializing in forgery and embezzlement and he has been employed by the blustering and cartoonish Nigel Mayfair, a rich, obsessive, hateful, and controlling man who lives in the imported Castle Cragie, and who has found that somebody has stolen some of his more valuable stamps. Along for the ride is Porterfield's son Andy, who is an expert in stamps. Sometime during the night, Mayfair, who lives in a house of people who hate him, is impossibly shot while in bed. This story comes very close to being a lock-room murder mystery, along with being a theft story. I actually remember reading this story forty years ago as a lad, and it holds up very well as it actually involves several puzzles and mysteries. I don't believe that you can shoot three bullets through a pane of glass without shattering it (see customer images), but that's the only flaw. This story is very much like Hitchcock's more mystery oriented television episodes. The Hardy Boys have turned stories like this into whole novels. As an ex-stamp collector, I give this story five stars.

The fourth story is 'The Mystery Of The Man Who Evaporated' and it deals with Jeff Landrum, who likes mysteries so much that he eventually becomes involved in a real life one. It all starts innocently enough. Jeff finds out that his English instructor Howard Matthews is writer of mystery short fiction. Then Matthews asks Jeff if he would like to go to a Mystery Writers Of America meeting and meet some mystery writers. Here Arthur does some name dropping as we meet Earle Stanley Gardner, Ellery Queen (both of them), Walter Gibson, and another neighbor of Jeff's, locked-room mystery author Harley Newcomb, who seems to be a thinly disguised John Dickson Carr. Newcomb is a compulsive writer who is enthusiastically working on what he considers one of his best novels. Excited about his novel, he leaves the meeting early, and then. . .just disappears. When Jeff and Matthews go to visit Newcomb they find that his rented house is in the same condition as the one that he had described in his new novel. It is locked and nailed up from the inside. Because the local yokels are as thick as fenceposts, Jeff and Matthews have to investigate the disappearance on their own, only to get into trouble by being too nosey. There is a hint of science fiction in this story that goes by the wayside at the story's end. While the story is a genuine locked room puzzle, it has a very disappointing, contrived, and ridiculous denouement. This is NOT a fair-play story, and there is no way you can solve the puzzle. Two stars. Nice set-up, but that's about it.

The last story 'The Mystery Of The Four Quarters' finds twins Bettye and Nick Layton in deep trouble as they are kidnapped from the Blackwell Mansion by the fat Mr. Nemo and his oversize thug Fritz, because Nemo wants a new invention of their father's. This is a suspense story that concentrates more on the puzzle; how do the children contact their father, tell him where they are, and do so without their captors catching on to their scheme, than the story's probability of possibility. Again, here is a story that I don't think that there are many who could solve the oblique and contrived puzzle. It's entertaining and all, but the puzzle depends on knowing too much information that is barely touched on, and a puzzle that is almost impossible to decipher. Two stars.

Robert Arthur (1909-1969) had a long career with Hitchcock, ghost editing nine of his anthologies, writing for his television show, his magazine, and creating the Three Investigators. He had also had a long career in writing for the pulps, he was one of Isaac Asimov's favorite authors, for radio, he co-created "The Mysterious Traveler" (1943-1952), and here he kick-started Hitchcock's entry into the juvenile mystery market. Each of the stories here features a teenage investigator, at least one illustration, and, like Hitchcock's tv show, is interrupted intermediately by comments from Hitchcock. Most of comments can be skipped if you want, but they are essential in 'Mystery/Four Quarters' to understand the puzzle.

However, 'Five Sinister Thefts', 'Seven Wrong Clocks' and 'Three Blind Mice' are all stories that make this a four star read, even if 'Man/Evaporated' and 'Four Quarters' bring the collection down a star. I got this book from my library after it was culled from its shelves this year, altogether, it has been there (since 1966), and checked out and read, for forty-four years!

For this site I have also reviewed the following juvenile mysteries:

bigfoot by Hal George Evarts
The Case of the Somerville Secret by Robert Newman
Mystery Of Mordach Castle by William MacKellar
The Road Of The Dead (Push Fiction) by Kevin Brooks
Skull Island (Usborne Adventure) by Lesley Sims
A Ufo Has Landed by Milton Dank & Gloria Dank

Great Wine Made Simple: Straight Talk from a Master Sommelier, by Andrea Immer Robinson

From “one of the wine world’s most popular voices” (USA Today), a newly updated edition of her by-now classic introduction to wine, GREAT WINE MADE SIMPLE: Straight Talk from a Master Sommelier, reflects up-to-the minute wine trends, including the burgeoning popularity of the Shiraz grape, new flavor maps, and much, much more.

First published in 2000, Great Wine Made Simple established Andrea Immer Robinson as America’s favorite wine writer. Avoiding the traditional and confusingly vague wine language of “bouquet” and “nose,” and instead discussing wine in commonsense terms, the book launched Andrea’s career as a wine authority without pretense.

Now, thoroughly revised, Great Wine Made Simple lives up to its title by making selecting and enjoying wine truly simple. With Andrea Immer Robinson as your guide, you will never again have to fear pricey bottles that don’t deliver, snobby wine waiters, foreign terminology, or encyclopedic restaurant wine lists. You’ll be able to buy or order wine with confidence--and get just the wine you want--by learning how the “Big Six” basic styles (which comprise 80 percent of today’s top selling wines) taste and how to read any wine label. Ten new flavor maps show what tastes you can expect from climates around the world.

Andrea Immer Robinson genuinely knows more about wine than most wine lovers could ever hope to learn. But she doesn’t believe that you have to join a stuffy, exclusive wine-tasting set, or study a lot, to become a savvy wine buyer. Unlike other wine guides, Great Wine Made Simple makes it easy to master the ins and outs of choosing a wine that you and your guests will love—on any budget.

In her down-to-earth style, Andrea guides you through follow-along-at-home wine tastings that are easy, fun, and affordable, and even suggests a milk tasting for understanding variations in wine-body style. Building on this foundation, she covers the rest of the wine landscape with her inimitable style, candor, and humor, from classic regions to new tastes, plus a bevy of practical issues like wine gear and proper storage. A refreshing blend of in-depth knowledge and accessibility, Great Wine Made Simple is a welcome resource for those who are intrigued by wine but don’t know where to start.

Amazon.com Review
About one-third of the way through Andrea Immer's Great Wine Made Simple, the author recounts an anecdote that could serve as the book's theme--alligator, rabbit, and squab were all introduced to her the same way: "Tastes like chicken." And as demonstrated by Immer, who went from debentures to de Rothschild when she quit Morgan Stanley to eventually oversee the 50,000-bottle cellar at Manhattan's famed Windows on the World, the leap from pigeon to Pichon-Lalande is analogous: teaching novice wine drinkers what to expect is what her book, aptly subtitled "Straight Talk from a Master Sommelier", is all about.

With emphasis on her "Big Six" varietals--Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon--this "Immer-sion" class of tastings lets amateur sippers differentiate the typical qualities of each, while illustrating wine terms such as dry, crisp, oaky, and tannic. Practical advice abounds; one chapter devotes itself to finding useful info on a wine label while avoiding "Stupid Label Tricks," those bits of puffery or unfamiliar flavors (how many have actually tasted lychee or red currant?) that can be confusing the average buyer. And her "Flavor Map" concept--dividing the wine world into three climate zones--eschews memorization in favor of some rudimentary geography.

Throughout, her pronunciation guides are accurate and personable ("If you're pronouncing 'Riesling' right you have to smile."); and she provides a great postgraduate curriculum of buying strategies, including the pros and cons of wine shops versus your nearest Costco; and a consumer advisory about restaurant's "award-winning wine lists." --Tony Mason

A Wine-Oh Book for us Wine-Don't-Knows
By A Customer
This book is about the fifth or sixth book on this subject I have purchased in recent years. It's the first one that speaks to me like the novice I am. It's direct, it's easy reading, it's simple to follow, and it tells you what you need to know to be comfortable ordering wine in a restaurant, or buying it in a store. It's not full of high-brow rhetoric thrown in to impress the reader. It's entry level stuff -- information that you don't have to be a connoisseur to understand. For me, since I like wine but have no interest in becoming some sort of wine snob, this book gave me exactly what I needed to have a handle on what I'm buying. As far as what wine goes with what, and how it is served, it's all in there. If you want to get up to speed in layman's terms, this is the book to get. I thank Immer for writing it. A sommelier I'm not; I'm just a consumer who wanted a basic understanding of the subject, and I got it from this book... finally.

Want to increase your enjoyment and knowledge of wine?
By drdebs
If so, you should seriously consider buying this book for yourself, and for any friends who might have the same goal. I have enjoyed wine for a number of years, but have not ventured forth much from the cabernet-merlot-chardonnay rut because it all seemed so overwhelming. You go to the wine store and signs give wines different points from different people for wines you've never heard of and can't pronounce.
Enter Andrea Immer, the sassy and straightforward Master Sommelier! Immer makes wine approachable, fun, and stimulating. Through a variety of different techniques (comparison tasting, old world wines vs. new world wines, flavor maps, and varietal information) Immer will open up your wine world and give you the confidence to sally forth to your local wine shop and ask for a Gruner Veltliner (she also tells you how to pronounce it!)to go with your chicken dinner. She also totally demystifies the restaurant wine list and tells you how to make good and economical choices from it.
There is no pretention at all in this book. Ms. Immer is not a wine snob, nor does she make wine into some obscure chemical and gastronomical science. She knows her stuff so well she can make is simple for you, me and everybody else who would like to buy a $10 bottle of wine and find it is reasonably tasty.
By the way, friends much more expert than myself have confessed that they bought the book and found a great deal of information that was helpful to them, too, so this book is not just for wine beginners.

Don't buy it in Kindle version
By Stjepan
I hope that this is the first and the last time that I write a review for a book before reading it in it's entirety. Actually I feel that I have to prevent other people from buying it in Kindle version. Reason?! Text of the book which is, I have to admit by now, extremely well written and nicely presented, is at the same time frequently followed by tables and lists with comparisons which are almost illegible in Kindle version. Option to zoom the page doesn't help either while text in tables is rather pale and can cause you only frustration and eye fatigue. By now I would have given 5 stars for the content and 1 star for how it is packaged. Seriously, everyone who bought this product via whisper-net should be reimbursed because none deserves to pay almost 19$ to get effectively 80% of the clear original content and 20% of reading frustration. Unfortunately I had no luck to be warned by someone else before buying the product. Do what you like but spare your money and DO NOT BUY IT IN KINDLE VERSION!!
